iPod Touch ... NO Bluetooth

touch Unless the Wi-Fi chip has Bluetooth built into it, if you were on the fence about getting the iPod Touch and Bluetooth is important to you .... forget it!   Gizmodo has a post today confirming that the iPod Touch Definitely Has No Bluetooth! Unbelievable!

Gizmodo linked us to the folks at ifixit who have once again carefully and methodically dissected a device, this time the iPod Touchs prey interesting and there are some great pics showing the process but there is no Bluetooth ... why?

Some of what they did find was:

- Audio chip is identical to the iPhone's
- Samsung memory (like the iPhone's)
- Processor similar to the iPhone's
- Display is attached to the iPod with 16 screws (iPhone uses adhesive)
- Display is scratch-resistant, like iPhone

You would think a brand new, cutting edge mp3 player, would feature bluetooth support for stereo headsets. I'm shocked that all manufacturers aren't offering that as standard.

Well, you would expect it from a top-end device, at least. I am disappointed, but as an electrical engineer, I wonder if there is an empty socket that you could just drop the correct SMD onto and toggle a bit in the firmware to enable it. The pictures are far from complete, and this picture here appears to show multiple unused pads.
The presence of the BlueTooth selection on the factory test screen doesn't suggest anything but that Apple recycled some code, processors, and other functions.
By the way, I'm not really hopeful that anything short of an heroic effort will enable BT on the Touch anytime soon. Just wait for 2G.

Incidentally, just today, I utilized some disused components (yes, they had been desoldered and removed), with some jumpering and trace-cutting to solve a problem on a power supply board. I fixed the power-transient power-down problem.
