How do you want to Comment?

faq_questionmark I am asking all the readers for their thoughts.

Last week, I had a reader send in comment via our contact form and basicly stated that they would love to comment on articles, but they didn't want to have to sign up in our forums to do so.

We have a great community and the forum commenting was put in place to allow the members an easy method of commenting in a format they already know from being forum minded folks. I love that, it's great for the community.

Well, this comment had me thinking. If someone takes the time to send this in, there has to be others that just don't feel like taking the effort to tell us too. I decided to enable both styles of commenting for now. We'll see how this goes a while. If you check out the site, you will notice a line for forum comments and "regular" comments.

Head over and chime in with your thoughts too. Nothing has changed from the early days of Aximsite, I still value all input and want the site to be what you want it to be. Ya know.

I don't like commenting on the front page. I left a comment there last week and it was held for moderation.

There's a disconnect between those comments and the comments here in the forum. If anyone posts a comment here, they may have no knowledge of the comments that are posted on the front page. Seems discombobulated to me....

Why create a solution to accommodate folks that have no real interest in becoming regular participants in the community? It's not that hard to create a user name and password, and I have every confidence that MobilitySite / Aximsite does not use my personal information for any untoward purposes.

Hi,

I have joined forums and been contributing to them after being a guest poster offering or getting advice.

This is a good idea if the moderators are diligent in monitoring the posts by guests.

Some people do not want to join before getting to try things out a little bit.

This can always be changed back to the current system if there is abuse.

I agree with harpgliss; if you are a forum member, just comment in the forums. The front page comments adds an additional layer of potential interaction, enabling the more casual user to participate. In the future, they may become regular members, and early satisfaction with the system may aid in their decision to do so.

I agree with Julie. Non-member posts are kind of like walking into a group of people you don't know and voicing an opinion without sticking around long enough to "get the picture" of what's going on.

There is an element of familiarity that factors in to messages posted here. I dunno about anyone else but I have more of a tendency to give credence to an opinion expressed by someone I've seen on the board for awhile than I do to someone who comes on here and voices a strong opinion about something when they've posted 1 message. Does that make sense?

That makes perfect sense. If we follow your recommendations do we become forum xenophobic? We shouldn't take for granted that members know any better than non members and I think the extra input would be valuable, considering it is always subject to moderation. I have been pushing for an open input at another site I'm involved in, it's like advertising for passing trade. Some of the passers by become valued customers. I like the Idea of giving it a go:approve:

How does this work? What is there to prevent people from dumping in stupid/crude/inane comments? Yes, I know they can register and do that, but I suspect that registering is just annoying enough to weed out a fair number of nimwits.

I think the way it works is that guests can only post comments to the article on the main page, but not here in the forum. Any comments posted there are moderated by Chris or another Administrator (the moderators don't moderate these posts).
