Opera announces Opera Mobile 8.65 for Windows Mobile Smartphones and PDAs

Opera Software today released the new version of Opera Mobile 8.65 for Windows Mobile. Following the positive reception and rapid market adoption of Opera Mobile for the Windows Mobile platform, Opera took strides to continue providing Smartphone and Pocket PC users with a superior Web-browsing experience. Today's release, Opera Mobile 8.65 for Windows Mobile, is the culmination of user feedback and beta testing results to further enhance the Web-browsing experience on Windows Mobile devices with Opera's winning small-screen performance.

The high demand for Opera Mobile on Windows Mobile has further fueled its development at Opera. Major manufacturers, such as Motorola, Samsung, HTC, Asus, Sharp and Toshiba, have licensed and installed Opera Mobile on Windows Mobile devices, while consumers have also independently acquired the Web browser with over three million downloads from the company site.

"The Windows Mobile platform has proved to be a powerful stage for Opera Mobile." says Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. "With Opera Mobile 8.65, users will improve their online productivity and amplify their level of fun through a superior experience that is unique to Opera and its powerful small-screen Web technologies."

Opera Mobile 8.65 for Windows Mobile provides Flash support, allows users to send links by e-mail, SMS or MMS, and adds several menu and user interface enhancements such as an integrated search field in the address bar.

New Features for Opera Mobile 8.65:

  • Support for Macromedia Flash Player 7 for Pocket PC
  • FlashLite 2.1
  • Text Wrap in Desktop Mode
  • Grab and Scroll (only applicable to Pocket PC)
  • Web search in address bar
  • Save image
  • Copy text
  • Send link as e-mail, SMS and MMS
  • Import bookmarks from Pocket Internet Explorer
  • Desktop Mode as default viewing mode

Opera Mobile 8.65 for Windows Mobile is available for download from Opera's website and includes a free 30-day trial. The full version costs 19 Euro for each, the Windows Mobile Standard/Smartphone and Windows Mobile Professional/Pocket PC platform.

Finally this is out of beta. :D Unfortunately, the previous 8.65 beta also expired today... :( I had some odd problems with it where Opera would crash and quit (possibly due to low memory), so I hope those bugs have been ironed out on this release. Luckily the (new?) trial that is available now is good for 30 days.

I hope to get a chance to upgrade Opera on my phone (ATT 8525) tonight and check it out. Looks great!

It's not really much better than the beta as far as I can tell.

Major changes from the beta:

+ Removed "One Column Mode"

+ Added the ability to see embedded YouTube videos

+ Added percentage view to the download area - you see the bar move as well as the numeric value (eg: 60% completed).

+ Added "Send current web address as" menu option

+ Added "Use Grab and Scroll" to context menu, which means you can use it even if you've disabled the option in the Settings area so you could select text.

+ Added Auto-Select features to various languages (Chinese, Japanese) which have multiple encoding methods.

+ Allows for different Zoom levels on different tabs (just tested it out - works fine)

+ Changed bookmark management area to use drop-down menus instead of the back-forward arrows. It's a TAD neater this way.
