Wi-Fi Detector Shirt, Self-Detects Geeks

Saw this over at Gizmodo last night. I normally laugh in disbelief at most of the Tech Clothing out there. (well, except for ScottEvest stuff) Most of them are gimmicky and this one is no different, but this one does something special. This one detects one of my favorite invisible forces in the RF congested world. It detects WiFi

The Wi-Fi Detector shirt does everything you'd dream it could do: detect Wi-Fi signals and share them, via your chest, with the entire world. Spotting both 802.11b and 802.11g networks, signal strength is displayed in real time. After you are done broadcasting your (super ability?) to the world, just slip the AAA batteries out of the built-in pouch and unhook the decal, and you can wash the sweat away of a hard day's work of bandwidth theft.

The indicator apparently lights up with the strength of the signal. Walk around looking down at your chest, bars light up, STOP... pull out the laptop and steal WiFi.

You can score one of these at Think Geek, where else would you expect?

No, the problem was that she didn't obey instructions and looked like she had a bomb. This looks like a shirt with LED's on it.

I'm more concerned by the laws about stealing WiFi in various places... and wondering if wearing one of these shirts violates them. ;)

There is nothing at all in detecting the presense of and the Strenth of stray RF. When you pop out your laptop or PDA and try to hack into a secure network riding that rf, then we get to right or wrong.

Some places have it so the laws nail you for using unsecured WiFi - which makes the whole 'take out your laptop after finding (and sharing) signal thing the problem. I wonder if cops would think of this as 'stealing' WiFi, given how uneducated some are?
