New Opera Link allows mobile and desktop synching

opera

The folks over at Opera have been busily working to lock down that pesky issue of being able to synchronize shared content between users' desktop browsers and their mobile web browsers.  The fruits of those labors is the new Opera Link solution, a melding of a MyOpera account and the mobile and desktop versions of the Opera web browser.  In teaming these items up, users now can have the same bookmarks appear on both their desktop Opera browsers and their mobile Opera browsers.

To use the service, users must set up a MyOpera account and download the latest (v. 9.5) betas of opera for their desktops.  Once Opera is installed and started up, simply choose the menu option "synchronize bookmarks", enter the MyOpera login information, and the bookmarks will be immediately synched to that account.

From the mobile side, a user will need to download and install Opera Mini 4 Beta, go to the menu option for "synchronizing bookmarks", and Presto! the desktop bookmarks will be installed on the mobile device.  For those devices with a browser that doesn't support Opera Link, go to link.opera.com to view the desktop links there.

It seems strange to me that the excellent Opera Browser for a Desktop or Laptop (which I use a lot and which is as good as Firefox except that it does not have a spell checker) is FREE, but Opera Mobile costs $24.

Perhaps I am missing something but I simply cannot see the point of browsing the Internet on a PDA. Either you have to use a PDA modem which is cumbersome and quite expensive, or the PDA has to connect to the internet through your Desktop/Laptop either via the cradle or remotely via Bluetooth or Wi-fi. In either case surley it is far easier and better to browse on the Desktop!

You could connect via a Bluetooth cell 'phone, but that is very expensive.

Also it is impossible to view a web page properly on a PDA. Even a VGA screen is simply too small so you either have to scroll around both horizontally and vertically or reduce the text size to be so small that it is impossible to read.

There is, perhaps, some point in browsing on a cell 'phone or on a PDA when away from home/office and in a Wi-fi enabled area but again the screen restrictions are severe.

If you really want to browse and receive/send e-mails on the move, then the best answer must surely be a BlackBerry.
