Motion To Discontinue the LS800 Tablet PC ... a sad day for me!

You always remember your first!

ls800a And I remember the first time I was at the Annual Microsoft MVP Summit in Redmond where I saw a very very cool computer.  It was during a demonstration that one of the presenters had this very small device that he used for the presentation.  It was the Motion LS800.  For me it was love at first site and I spent several months agonizing if I should buy it or wait.  I finally decided that I didn't want to wait and bought the LS800 and have enjoyed it immensely ... it has been a terrific experience on many fronts.

As a portable computing solution, its power and size have enabled me to Experience Mobility at an incredibly high level.  With daily use, for hours at a time, this device was truly a workhorse.  Not only was I pleased with the device and its capabilities but I have also been incredibly pleased with Motion Computing and their support personnel.  Some time back, after a year of very heavy usage, I started to develop an issue with my LS800.  I struggled with it for a while but was unable to resolve it.  Not a problem!  Motion Computing had my back!  Without hesitation they sent a box and took it back for repair.  Surprisingly, after a few days I had it back and for a while it appeared to be working fine but then another issue began that was incredibly frustrating.

I had several conversations with the folks at Motion and I cannot express in words just how awesome they were.  Again they asked me to return it but I wanted to try to resolve the issue myself ... I guess that is what we do.  So for a couple of weeks I was in contact with a great guy at Motion who offered me solutions to try and he continued to offer to have me send it back and he would look at it personally.  Well, eventually I was unable to resolve it ...and I did send it back.  He worked on it and came to the conclusion that it was time to replace the device. So in a matter of days, I had a NEW LS800 and this one had a bonus ... a SSD drive.

Like my Pocket PC phones, this Motion Tablet is a constant companion always providing me a rich user experience.

GottaBeMobile.com posted today about the discontinuation of the LS800.  It is a sad day but yet, it might be the sign for the next generation of the LS800 will be coming soon.... the LS900?  I hope so!  In a heartbeat I will order it!  In Rob's post, he said that he "just received word from Motion Computing that it intends to "End-of-Life" the highly successful LS800 Tablet PC".  So why is it being discontinued?  It's anyone's guess but the party line is "largely due to the components used to manufacturer the LS800 being in short supply and facing their own EOL".

More after the break:

This alert serves as formal notification that Motion intends to EOL the LS800 platform by January 1, 2008 or while supplies last.  The LS800 was introduced in July 2005 and has been a market success for the past two and a half years.  Rapid advancements in mobile technology and wireless communications- while good news for new customer deployments, have resulted in shorter than normal product and component lifecycles.  Unfortunately, many of the LS800 components have reached end-of-life and thus limit Motion's ability to continue producing this product.

Supplies of the recently introduced 1.1GHz configurations continue to be available for customer purchase in the U.S., Canada, & select Pacific Rim geographies.  Unfortunately, supplies have already been depleted for Western European geographies.  Motion thanks all of our partners and customers for their contribution in making the LS800 a successful product.

LS800 Supported Peripherals
The LS800 Tablet, Pen, & Extended Battery will be supported and serviced for 3 years until December 31, 2010.
Motion has a limited inventory of Standard Batteries for aftermarket purchase.  Once this inventory has been exhausted, only the Extended Battery will be available.

The MobileDock will continue to be available while supplies last (limited supplies exist, so get your orders in quickly).  Service and support for the LS800 MobileDock will continue thru December 31, 2008.

The LS800 Bump Case will be serviced and supported for 90 days.  Additional Bump Cases can be purchased from Elegant Packaging after this time.

Anyway, I would not worry, if Motion knows whats good for them, they are getting ready to intro a new version.
