A new report shows that Apple's new Mac OS X version, Leopard, has outsold Windows during October. Between September and October, sales of OS X jumped from under 16% to just over 60%. Windows sales dropped from 75% to less than 30%.
It is expected that the sales of OS X will drop back to normal levels. But, one reason that OS X Leopard may be enjoying such success over Vista is that Vista sells for a whopping $276 in Japan, while OS X goes for $134.
I'm a Windows user, but I saw some Mac models at Best Buy yesterday and they really are beautiful. Ouch. it hurts to say that.
If all I was doing is browsing, listening to music, drawing pictures, editing video, etc. I would go for OS X, no problem at all. The problem is, many people have to use custom applications for their work, therefore that locks them into Windows. If my applications were available in OS X, honestly, I wouldn't stay a minute with Windows or PC hardware. Macs are just too damn beautiful.

you can dual boot into windows relatively easily now with the intel chips in the new macs. Makes it very nice to have to go back and forth when I need to use a windows only application. If you use Boot Camp with Parallels Desktop, you don't even have to shut down completely. It all depends on what you need windows for.

The Recommended Retail Price for Vista Home Premium Edition in the UK is £219.99 (c.$440USD) and for Leopard it is £85 (c.$170USD) - that's a big difference!
However, I suspect that most new OS are either upgrades (cheaper) or come with new PCs. Notwithstanding the fact that the UK seems to pay significantly more than Steve's report, I can't see wholesale changes to Apple: one of the reasons that I have never considered a MAC is that the cost of replacing all of my software is prohibitive.
A Mac is a pretty box on which you can run your copy of Windows - I do not know a Mac owner who hasn't had to use Parallels with Windows to actually use their computer.
By the way, this survey does not take into account new PCs bought with Windows vs. Mac OS - take these into account and Windows has more than a 97% market share this year in Asia.

That's the key right there.

Or you can just run XP, not worry about dual-booting all the time and do it all.
I'm certainly not against the other O/S offerings - but I'll consider them seriously when they stop including the caveat "Dual Boot to Windows". Until these other O/S can stand on their own they'll always be in distant 2nd place.
Heh ... I promised myself I wouldn't participate in any more O/S discussions but this was just too tempting.
