is a single use device a good option?

umpcreaderI have been reading today the news about the new Amazon eBook Reader. And when I saw this picture "photoshoped" by my friend Steve from UMPCPortal I was not surprised at all because I though the same thing. I agree that a single use device does what ever it was designed to do a lot better but if you have another device that can substitute that device and at least 3 or 4 more paying almost the same price you paid for the first one, I will go for that device. And that device is called UMPC. The only device where you can have a eBook Reader, a GPS Device, a DVD Player, a MP3 Player and a PC all in one small device. And all that with the flexibility of selecting the best software in each of this functions something that you won't be able to do if you buy any of those devices that we are replacing.  I guarantee you that you won't find a eBook reader capable of reading all the different eBooks formats currently available but we can read any of those eBooks in our UMPCs.

I know that current UMPCs do not have a long battery life and that the screen is not that good for reading eBooks, but come on, it's a new technology! Little by little we are getting there.

So, after all this analysis I ask myself, is a single use device a good option?

I whole heartedly agree Ctitanic!

I agree that the single purpose device would probably do a better job but given a choice, I'd rather have one device that can perform several tasks well.

and that being said, I don't see where there is a real problem (except for money)

If you spend a lot of time reading ebooks, then a nice standalone reader makes sense

If you like taling great photos, then a great camera makes sense

Want to listen to 30 hours of music, get a MP3 player.

etc.

However, if you do not want to carry your cellphone, laptop, ebook reader, ipod, tomtom navigator, Canon DSLR, PSP, etc at all times... then a converged device makes a more utilitarian and efficient selection

Don't get me wrong, if they sell the reader for 20 dollars I would buy it. But knowing the limitations and the fact that it's a reader where I'll have to spend 100s of dollars to buy all the books I want in my library. It's the same with mp3 players such like the iPod and Zune. Microsoft is selling a lot of Zunes lately because they have been hitting the sweet spot of 100 dollars for a player with 30 GB. But think about it. You get a mp3 player and you will have to keep paying for the music. These devices should not cost more than 100 dollars.
