Seems the web is gaga over this new ebook reader from Amazon. I kind of see why, but on the other hand, I wonder... Why?
With the advancements in screen resolution and memory capacity on PDAs, Pocket PC Phones, etc... Why would you want a stand alone reader? I have to admit though, I am not much of a fiction reader, but I do read a few non-fiction books in the ebook format on my Pocket PC Phones.
For ease of getting content, I can see some of these readers being useful, especially the Kindle. The linking of Amazon over the air via EVDO is pretty nice, but it's really not tough to drop an ebook onto your SD or MicroSD card.
I just don't get it really. I have seen some peers online getting excited about this Amazon Reader and I just don't get it.
What are your thoughts?
PS. There are 139 Customer Reviews of a Device just announced on Amazon. How does that happen?
If I can get more than 12 hours battery life, and a paper like contrast levels, with no annoying backlight glare, then I'd be interested, My old Palm, Axim and smartphone couldn't do it.. My LCD monitor and laptop can't.
The Paper back is doomed... I don't think this is the device that will kill it, but by the end of the next gen, then paperbacks will go the way of the Vinyl disk, cassette tape and CD(?)

There have been many attempts to introduce electronic readers and many predictions about the demise of the physical book. Although I very much love my Axim and appreciate digital content reference and database materials, I doubt I will ever get comfortable with electronic books and magazines. They're handy for an article or two, but for real reading, I very much like the old forms. Free content online from the New York Times led me very quickly to get home delivery when it became available in my area.
People who very much prefer electronic media sources might well go with a device that can perform multiple functions. I really doubt the success of Amazon's device.
Why? Have you seen the SONY's version!? That thing is incredible. The screen is as clear as any printed material, you can carry many books on it, no more licking your fingers or bent corners, or any other annoyances that you get with real books. Sure, some people prefer the smell (stink) of ink and paper of printed versions, but why? Why occupy space on your bookshelf, they only will become a $1 books at used bookstore, or somewhere on the sidewalk, or worse, will end up in garbage.
I don't read books that much, but if I was given a gift of Sony Reader, I might consider (if I had more time commuting). Sony just didn't do enough marketing for it's device, now with Amazon's it is getting some attention.
Again, have you ever seen one of those (SONY's) in person, it is just incredible!

Mmmm....
I'm not entirely convinced that the paper version of knowledge management is doomed just yet.
There will be the early adopters, of course and, over time, these readers may take some of the market (particularly in academia and research), but for me the paper book will always be my first choice.
I read ALOT..... at least a book a week.... I was in Barnes and Noble yesterday with my daughter.... and picked up 4 more books (I can't resist).I love my AT&T Tilt and Dell Axim x51v for reading (using mobipocket reader)....but I miss the size of a "regular" page and I have been looking at the Sony Reader....or now perhaps the Kindle.
My husband (not a techie or gadget lover) actually brought home last night the latest Newsweek and said "You need this" (This, from the man who asked if my 8525 was "broken" when the Tilt came home and again when the Zune 80 appeared and joined the Zune 30) I didn't want to burst his bubble and tell him I was aware of the Kindle (he was so pleased to have found something I might like). I thanked him ...... and he told me to make sure Santa knew whether one needed to be under the tree this year (lol, I am Santa, and a new tech item or two to me from Santa always find there way under our tree)
For a book lover and a gadget lover... a good ebook reader is the best of both worlds!
I noticed James at jkontherun has bought one.... so I am going to see what he thinks about the device!
This thing peaked my interst too. The large size, minimal weight, contrast and wireless really makes it interesting. I read some on my Ax but a larger screen would be really nice. $399 is a bit over my choking price though... I think I'd rather spend that on a Tilt!
I love gadgets and I've tried reading ebooks on my PC, Laptop and Axim.. but it's just not my thing. If it's an article or a short review than it's fine but otherwise I'd take paper over LCD. :)

I like the idea of having all my books in an electronic gadget. Think of how much space I would save that way! And it would make it easier to carry around all those books......but I just love books. Books are kind of cuddly. I don't think I could lay on my couch with an electronic reader and have the same experience.

Dear Santa
I have been very good this year and I am looking forward to your visit with excitement. I promise to leave a nice twelve-year-old malt for you (with the customary mince pie) and carrots for the reindeer.
Looks like I will have a new Kindle under the tree this year :) Husband insisted (He is thrilled thinking "he saw it first" and I am not telling him anything different ;) )
I will let you know what I think about it once I get my hands on it! (Hopefully it will come to the house while he is at work and I can play with it a few hours before returning it to the box and turning it over to him to be wrapped and placed under the tree.... If not, I'll have to wait until Christmas morning!
