If you are on the fence, let me push you off. I am not "trying" to talk out of one of these, but I personally don't want one and would hate to see you guys dissapointed if you get one and can't use the EV-DO... That's where a great post from Gizmodo yesterday comes in... Make sure you are in a good area for use of the network.
I'm not sure if this is a widespread problem, but just in case - if you live within any of those gaping white spots in the image above, you probably shouldn't waste your money on the Kindle. Keep in mind that Amazon's wireless connectivity for the device is dependent on the Sprint network and, as everyone knows, Sprint's network blows goats in rural areas.
As a rightfully irritated commenter on BookofJoe noted, Amazon should have notified him of this when it bought it. That may be true, but you wouldn't expect your phone company to do that right? Besides, Amazon did mention all of this in the product page, but it could have been easily lost in the long list of information.
The network connection is interesting, but not something I would particularly desire in an eBook Reader - especially one that is pretty much there for the purposes of my buying product exclusively from Amazon (I know this connectivity can be used for other purposes). I have my pocket pc to give me connectivity when I'm away from my computer - either through WIFI connection or through GPRS/Edge connectiion. I would not pay a premium for an eBook Reader just to have this option.
I could see how someone who bought the Kindle so they could use the wireless feature would be disappointed if they are in an area of the country with poor or no connectivity.

“Where EV-DO isn’t available, Kindle connects via a second protocol called 1xRTT, which is an older 144Kbit/sec. standard. The addition of 1xRTT increases the number of locations where you have wireless access.”
OUCH; Wyoming, Dakotas, Nevada and Montana. I am sure most of the urban areas have coverage still.

Chris doesn't read e, a, g, i, z, or even B books. Well, maybe I look at picture books and I did read a berstein bears book last night.

Then maybe the Kindle screen is better than that of a PDA, the way some reviewers claim. Guess I've just been a bit skeptical. LOL. TY for the info. Still trying to talk myself out of buying one!
Kindle is black + white .... Axim is color - that's enough for me to stick with my Axim for now.
I do have an iLiad, it also displays only in black + white; but it allows me to take notes and load PDFs, some expanded utilities beyond what the Kindle offers.

Thanks to PocketBrain for bringing the parrot to life!! :)
The reason my PDA works for me, is that it goes everywhere I go, and hence I always have something to read...
... The Kindle looks like a really nice reader, it may even give a nicer reading experience on the eyes... But I'd have to take a case with me when I travel to put the thing in, and if i was doing that I could take a book.
