DesqView? Yup ... remember that one. Also used an item called B&F Professional ... it was a context task switcher for DOS. Worked reasonably well; you could set up a bunch of DOS sessions and task-switch between them. It wasn't true multitasking but it came close to that kind of functionality.
Windows 3.1 was actually an excellent multitasker for DOS sessions. The GUI applications all shared one VM - but it created multiple independent VM's for DOS sessions. Not many people realized that you could have TRUE multitasking of DOS sessions under Win3.1 but you could! I could have a download going in one partition, a compile going in another and a word-processor going in yet a 3rd and they all completed very quickly. Switching between them was instantaneous.
