Are You Obsessed with Mobile Content?

AT&T Are you willing to pay $13 to $25 per month in addition to regular phone-service charges to watch TV on your mobile device?  AT&T is betting that you are and plans on launching its live mobile service early next year with eight channels.  Supposedly the service has been delayed to "fine tune" the experience but my guess is that the delay is has more to do with negotiations with ESPN, MTV, NBC, CBS and Fox.

Will you use this service?  Is TV that important to add another $150-$300 a year to your already expensive plan?  They seem to think so!

There is an interesting piece by Todd Spangler here at the Multichannel News

Personally I think that's getting silly. People already can't "unplug" now as it is. Before long we're going to be building multimedia tranceivers into our heads then we'll never have to come out of cyberspace any more.

I like my gadgets as much as the next guy - but this being "online" 100% of the time is getting pretty ridiculous. I see people walking around with those silly BlueTooth earplugs everywhere they go because they just can't stand to be offline for one minute. I hear guys talking on the phone and/or playing games while they sit on the crapper in the mens room. Been out driving lately? Look in any car you pull up next to and there's at least a 50-50 chance the person in the car is absorbed in a phone conversation.

We are becoming the Borg.

I think mobile tv is a little dumb. We're coming into the age of HD content. You can see the pores on athletes faces when they're playing for gods sake! I just don't see what's so desirable about staring down at my phone to watch 30 minutes of a tv show. The only place this -could- be useful is on long trips, like airplanes(where you can't use your phone anyways), or driving trips(where your service will cut in and out).

I even have a hard time with personal media players. Sure, the idea is good...but why would I load up my ipod with movies and tv shows. It's a total pain in the ass trying to stare at a tiny screen while I'm running on the treadmill, I can't see it when it's in my pocket, and my girlfriend gets pissed if I'm sitting on the couch playing with all my gadgets instead of her. *wink wink*

I'm all about technology, but you have to draw the line somewhere. About a year and a half ago, I gave up myspace, Instant messaging, online gaming. It's just too time consuming for very little gain. People aren't personal anymore. I don't ever want to fight with a loved one through aim, or get a message through myspace telling me my daughter is sick. While technology is great, the world is almost drowning in it. It's time to get out and go for a walk!

PS. I shut my cellphone off every night, when I have dinner, when I go to the gym, and when I do ANYTHING with my girlfriend. (blasphemy! I know...)
