Apple kicked off the Macworld Expo with the announcement of the new Apple MacBook Air. The ultrathin notebook is .76" at it's widest and tapers to a meager .16" at it's base. It weights a mere 3 pounds, has a backlit screen and a very unique multi-touch trackpad that sports the ability to rotate photos.
It has good specs as well, including a 1.6 or 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB ram and an 80 GB hard drive (or 64 GB SSD). It only has one USB port and no optical drive, and is priced at a reasonable $1799. It ships in 2 weeks.
To me this product is way underspec'd for the price! For $1300 I can upgrade to a SSD which gives me 64GB? I pass!
Just cause you don't like Macs doesn't mean you have to flame the post, lol. Macs are always a bit overpriced, and ya, their memory upgrades are a bit out there. That being said, I waited a bit longer than I should to upgrade to a Mac (mainly due to the price). Now, I did, it's worth it. Fortunately, Windows Vista gave me the needed push (funny how a brutal OS can do that).
So, to be clear, upgrading to the solid state drive is $999. Upgrading the processor from 1.6 to 1.8 is $300. If you add the two together, that's $1300 extra. I admit, the $999 sounds expensive, but I have nothing to compare it to (I've done a really quick search for solid state hard drives and couldn't find anything in regards to price).
You have to understand, this computer was made with specially designed parts, and I have to admit, I was actually surprised that the price wasn't higher. Honestly, $1799 to have a pretty powerful and extremely sleek and sexy notebook isn't that bad of a price (and you do get the 80 gig hard drive with the, the extra is only if you want the solid state 64 gig - gotta admit tho, bet that sucker is fast - imagine, starting an OS instantly from poweroff... hmm, I bet Windows is gonna figure out a way to make a solid state drive slow... lol).
One thing I can say - we can definitely thank Apple for matching form and function (a great OS which is fast, reliable and user friendly, and hardware which looks as good as it works). If it weren't for them, we'd still have notebooks that look like there were made by IBM (dang those were the ugliest things).

This thing is friggin thin. Now im anti-apple, but this made me turn my head. What a small device. If apple were smart they would introduce an even smaller model to compete with umpcs and tablet pcs. Imagine this with like a 7" screen and full kb.
But, apple is always overpriced. Maybe thats why i dont own any of their products. Besides im super cheap. The way apple users want to stick out from the majority of windows users is the same way i feel when i get a creative or sandisk branded mp3 player instead of the ipod.

Hmmm... Not sure if you looked at my profile but I do use a Macbook as my laptop? SSD on the Sony UX do not drive prices up. You might want to look up that one..

Oh ya, sorry about that. I agree, some Apple upgrades are crazy (RAM being one). But, I guess the thing is, people will buy them, and Apple is a business which wants to make money. Can't argue with market pricing.

Definitely a head-turner! This is a lovely looking piece of kit and I confess that I'm tempted to have a closer look
I've been working with and Apple fan recently and we've discussed their pricing policy; he points out that Apple ships with a lot more than Windows in terms of applications.
