hi, i use the oem keyboard and this is the first time i tried an alternative. all i can say is first rate. when you get to be my age, its nice to have bigger buttons to tap and see. makes things alot easier. you do give up alot of screen but in my case i think its worth it. thanks

Resco Keyboard 5.0

1.) Like most others, I find the new iSkin to be disproportionately sized. Vertically, the characters are spaced nicely, but they are also stretched such that the keyboard takes half of the screen of my Axim. Then, horizontally, the characters are comparatively narrow, causing frequent mistypes. There's not much room to work with, but it seems designed for the thick-fingered, not the wide-fingered, individual.

2.) BUG REPORT: If you are using the default Resco skin and set the calculator to Large, exit out of settings, then re-enter and reset the skin to iSkin, exit, and then press the number button you will receive the error message "Cannot load the selected skin. Please choose a valid skin or reinstall Resco Keyboard Pro." If you re-enter preferences Small will be the selected numeric skin, but for that setting to actually take effect you must choose Calculator and then Small before exiting out. The number key will then work. (Alright, who forgot that line of code? ;) )

2.) When using the iSkin you should be able to choose a default accent rotation scheme or at least have it based on the language selection. For instance, when I set the keyboard language to German I must rotate through the accent options of iSkin 4 times to get to the umlauts.

3.) Speaking of language options, iSkin lacks the ability to take advantage of Resco's second language option at all. Not enough room to add another button for that, but perhaps a menu option?

4.) Under the English layouts you only cycle through the accents once before returning to the main character layout if you choose not to choose a letter, but under the European languages I tried you had to cycle through twice. Consistency?

My proposal: If someone presses the accent button they, more than likely, want a specific accent key and will not be choosing a standard character, such as "h". Thus, the cycling through various accents is unnecessary and particularly tedious for those using accented characters not on the first page. Why not just show all of the accents on a single layout, removing the standard characters? That would eliminate the repetition (I personally dislike pressing the accent key 4 times every time I wish to type ü) and leave room for a 'language switch' option to swap between the primary and secondary keyboard layouts.

I'd still like a copy of Resco Keyboard 5.x, but hope they implement some changes in the near future.

Thanks!
John

1. iSkin doesn't work with Hebrew > worthless for me, I wonder what other languages it doesn't support
2. On Axim the upper row's preview is broken (iSkin)
3. The keyboard sometimes covers the text box - just try to update the app's own FX buttons

nice (apple's) idea -crappy (resco's) execution

I just bought a copy for my wife and now maybe I can win one for myself.

What I like about it was it was easy to type text with your thumbs (way better than the iphone) and I have large thumbs. This give me another option when not using my stylus.

Unfortunatly what I didn't like about it is that it does take a alot of screen real estate which is why it also works so well.

Can't have it both ways.

Andy

I love the Thumb mode, makes typing without the stylus very easy. Only inprovement is to make it show the preview letter of the key you have pressed above the keyboard a little higher, just a bit hard to see it with big fingers, other than it is is great.

Cheers

Cool

I love the Rosco Keyboard 5.0. Apart from the neat iPhone skin, I love the fact that the buttons are big so now I can type much faster. The drawback is that the the keyboard takes up a lot of screen space, but other then that, its the best keyboard application for Pocket PC!

P.S. I am not sure if WM 2003 SE Word does automatic spelling corrections, but for the first time when I type "i" on the screen, Rosco Keyboard changes it to a capital "I". Maybe it was there before but I didn't notice it in the previous version.

I have to agree that if I was looking for a product that was a clone of the iphone the large size of the keyboard would be an issue. If I was looking for a a solid product that typed very well , and was feature packed, I'd choose and expect anyone would be happy to own Resco keyboard . I like it!

i have a ipaq 4700 using ozvga. i run iLauncher as well. i just tried to use this on pword. seemed to work each time i pressed a key area the key showedlareg but not always showed up in the document. sometimes i got a space instead.
i do like it but i dont see how anyone could touchtype. i dont mind it using 2/3 of the screen as i still get 9 lines of text showing. The response is slow... without these problems i would love to use it.its much better than the original keyboard.

As a long-time user of Resco Keyboard Pro (I bought it in July 2004!), I downloaded the new version as soon as it became available, so I figured since I was trying it anyway, I might as well chip in with my thoughts here!

As far as I can see, there has not been much done with the 'classic' skin layouts from the previous version (although it does seem a bit snappier when changing between layouts e.g. abc<->123), and the biggest change is the introduction of the 'thumb-able' iSkin layout.

This works extremely well, and I found I was able to type short messages quite quickly and accurately. The downside, as other people have pointed out, is that the SIP is very tall and covers a lot of the screen. This is not such a problem in applications where the screen will scroll (like notes or messaging), but in applications where the screen layout assumes a SIP of standard height (yes it's naughty, but there are plenty of them), it soon becomes unusable. Plus, in landscape mode, it's really only usable for typing notes or messages, as only a couple of lines remain visible at the top of the screen - inputting data into an application or dialog is out of the question. To be honest, I am not sure of the need for such tall, thin buttons on this skin; I suppose it gives a little more tolerance for inaccurate finger placement in a vertical direction, but the left/right tolerance remains the same, so I can't see that much is gained. I would like to see this skin implemented with (at least an option for) a version that is not so tall - I think that would make it a lot more usable.

The other issue I have is the question of switching skins. What I really want is to have a thumb-able keyboard set as default (so that I can quickly send or reply to an email or text message), but to *easily* be able to switch to a standard keyboard if I want to enter an appointment in PI or do something else that really requires stylus input. It is simply too fiddly and time-consuming to go into the input method options, or to select another input method from the list. I have not yet seen this easy switching capability in any keyboard, including this one. The first keyboard that I see with this capability will get my $.

This sounds a bit negative; actually the new version is a big step forward for Resco Keyboard Pro, and I will probably upgrade to the latest version (using Resco's 50% discount offer for existing owners) unless I happen to win a free registration via this contest.

Cheers,
Ian

What's not to like?

I really dig the gorgeous skins and the options keypads (numeric or calculator).

My suggestion would be to add a skin creator so you could customize it to match whatever theme you are using.

Great SIP though!

Its OK on my ax51v, but it too large for my IPAQ 6955 (240x240).
But overall, I like it.

Yes! Please vote for one of us! :)

Everyone is a winner because there are 50 skins now available for everyone, but of course the HTC touch would be a great prize to win. :)
