Well, this isn't exactly mobility, but it's huge and affects a lot of us in a big way. I am stunned to be honest. Looks like all the blows that the Blu-ray camp has landed in the past couple months has the HD-DVD camp raising the white flag. Is this the 1st time that Sony has won a format war? Sony loves their proprietary formats.
The consumer electronics giant is expected to reveal plans to immediately halt manufacturing and development of HD DVD players and cease sales of all HD DVD products by the end of the month, the Nikkei business daily reported.
Toshiba President Atsutoshi Nishida is expected to make the announcement during a press conference Tuesday afternoon. He is also expected to reveal plans to ramp up Toshiba's investments in computer chips
On a personal note, I jumped on the HD-DVD train early on, but jumped off when I gave away my Xbox 360. I decided to buy one of those overpriced, $999 Sony Blu-ray players to match my Sony Bravia HD LCD. Boy, I am glad I did. Now I can start buying movies. I vowed to hold off adding to my collection until the war was won by someone. I planned at one time a blog about the format war,
HDWarzone.com, but really didn't have the time, so I abandoned the project.
