For years I would buy a pocket-size book like calendar, I have cards with addressed that I put in a flap that I would paste into the front cover.
At work, they had an employee discount for a Palm IIIxe. So, I got that, and used it for about 5 years.
I was watching the windows pocket pc for a while, and got to see a friends at work. When the Axim came out, I counted my pennies (lots and lots of pennies), and got it about 4 or 5 months after it came out.
I used my X5 for almost 5 or 6 years.
Last year I bought an x51v from someone on AximSite. They had two that didn't really get used, and decided to sell them. It was the full deluxe package with presentation cable and software, a GPS, and a Rhino case. I use it everyday now.
I started with a Handspring Visor
Then went with the Visor Deluxe
Then to the Visor Pro, all tricked out. I had the modem, two keyboards (for different purposes), and was the first reporter in this area to file scripts from the field with a handheld.
I had a couple of employer-purchased blackberries, which were okay for what they did.
My current job let me pick my device and plan, and I have the AT&T Tilt, which is pretty hard to beat. Would love to test it against the Fuze, though. (and since our personal phones at home are on AT&T, I can replace my wife's crappy RazR with a SIMcard swap...)
My very first PDA-like device was the Psion Sierra. Ah, back then that was a wonderful device. When it broke, however, I upgraded to the Series 5, then quickly got a 5mx when I saw how much better they were. I still have both of those, somewhere. Nothing at the time compared.
My first PDA-proper was the top of the range Axim X5, with Wifi card and MASSIVE (at the time) 512Mb SD card. Again, when I bought it, it blew away the competion in terms of spec-for-price. I kept that for a couple of years - adding satnav accessories amongst other things, then bought a Axim X50v, just weeks before I found out about the X51v. C'es la vie. I sold the X5 and all the various accessories to someone who wanted a cheap satnav setup. I think he might still be using it. For the X50v, I bought multitudinous cases and two cradles, plus extended batteries etc. I quickly became an addict of AximSite, which helped tweak and customise both those devices. It wasn't too long before I upgraded the X50v to WM5.
Last year, when I began having issues with the X50v's main port, I decided to go the converged device route, and got myself an HTC Advantage X7500. Good thing too - now I can't charge the X50v directly and one of the cradles is broken. I still have it, right here - but I'm not using it and I don't want to spend the money to fix something I wouldn't use.
Thanks to XDA-Developers, the Advantage runs SO much better than it did when I got it. Browsing, emails and spreadsheets on that screen are something I will never give up, but a few months agao I decided that it wasn't practical as a phone; plus my tariff (£0 - yes, zero - per month for more calls than I actually use) had no data component - so I got a cheap phone for my voice calls. Now the Advantage has a SIM in that I only use for HSDPA access ("unlimited" for £5/month PAYG), and it is my constant companion, wherever I am.
Right now, though, I'm missing the functionality of a having a WM device as my phone, so I've been looking hard at the Touch HD - but do I want to spend that kind of money, as I would still be using the Advantage for internet, office work navigating and watching videos? I really don't know. Currently I'm waiting to see if O2 UK will offer it as an upgrade...
My first PDA was an HP Jornada 430SE. I then picked up a Jornada 565. My first PDA/Phone combo was the Audiovox SMT5600, picked up from AT&T. Currently, I'm using an AT&T 8525 by HTC.

My PDA/Smartphone history is really short. I got my first one last Friday. It is the Tilt. I am loving it so far and am kicking myself for waiting so long to get one.
My PDA/SmartPhone History in a nutshell:
Palm (It has been too long so I don't remember the model)
Axim X50 mid - this device turned me on to AximSite/MobilitySite and WM
at&t 8525
Blackberry Curve - I took a new job that required a bb
iPhone 3G
Let me just say that there are many aspects of the iPhone that I truely love. The web browsing still cannot be beat. I use my iPhone to read my RSS feeds via Google Reader. The PDA functionality is still lacking. Hopefully this will be fixed with Pocket Informant.
I find myself missing certain areas of WM. Maybe with the new third-party browsers I could close to the web experience on the iPhone. I would love to give it a try and post a comparison of the Blackberry/iPhone/WM experiences.
I only have a short history although my love of handheld devices started with a tiny Casio databank. About 3 years ago I bought a Casio BE300 and despite much anticipation about it's arrival I was immediately disappointed and realised I'd made a huge mistake so I donated it to a good cause and ordered a Casio Cassiopeia E-125. this time I was happy with my lot but after about 4 months I hankered after a WM2003 device and I plumped for a Dell Axim X30. This was all I had ever wanted and more and lasted me about a year. I then decided to upgrade again and bought a HP iPAQ hx2490 running WM5. I liked the design and feel of this iPAQ but I never really fell in love with it so I sold it and went back to a WM2003SE device, an iPAQ rx3715 which I still have.
I then bought a Palm Treo 500v to replace my old Nokia and I love this phone which runs WM6. It's the first Palm device I have owned but I don't think it will be the last.
Last week though I decided to take the last step of my journey and bought a Dell Axim X51v and although we are still getting used to each other I can tell this relationship will last a long, long time.
I started with the NEWTON of all things, after having had a number of cheaper devices before that.
When the palm V came out in like 1997, I had one of those, then moved to an imate product.
then an axim,
then the first hp ipaq, still have it.
then some more HPC products, then Hx4700,
then a trea 600p, then 600wx, then HTC 6700, then 6800, then waiting to get a TPro now. I would LOVE the fuze since I also have ATT
I think WM is finally getting into its stride and can offer solid functionality and performance not to mention the expandability and the best hardware products.
I'd like to first start out by congratulating you on the 6th birthday. I think what you do is great and then you giving away stuff all the time like this is just an extra bonus for all your followers. Oh yea, by the way, I'm looking in to coming to Vegas!!!
Anyway my PDA/smartphone history started in 04-05, I think. My first was the Treo 650. I then switched to the Treo 680 with the palm os when it first came out. I was so excited because of the new design. And then a couple months later the 750 came out with windows mobile and I had to have it so I sold the 680. At some point during all this phone switching I got two of the Nokia E62's for my fiance and I to try out and we were not impressed. So then I started getting curious about the Blackberry products. I first tried the Pearl, thought it was decent and used it for a while. Now the Original iPhone came out, I didn't give in and buy one when it first came out, I waited a few months. I fell in love with the iPhone, and also got the iPhone 3g the day it was released. Within the past couple months I've been itching to try something new. I broke down and bought the Blackberry Bold after a long period of time studying and reading reviews and watching videos of the Bold and the Fuze. I could not decide which new phone I wanted to try. I ended up with the bold because my At&t store did not have the fuze in for me to even look at. It was a dead heat after all my research but I think I would have went with the Fuze due to my history with windows mobile with the treo 750. So that's it, I would LOVE to win this Fuze you are giving away and I would say bye to blackberry.
