A picture could be worth a thousand words in my case:
I still have each one of these, though I had traded my original Axim, and recently got a new one.

The first Pocket PC I used is the very first iPaq in 2000. No I didn't own it, but since the company I worked for back then worked on PPC, we had one hand delivered by the father of iPaq.
Then I used the color screen iPaq, HP Jornada, Nokia 7710, Nokia 7700, Nokia 6600. And of course Axim x50v. Currently I'm using Qtek A8300.

I started with the Jornada 525 which I smashed the screen on so then I was hooked. Next I had another Jornada 525 used that I smashed the screen on. Then I had one of the originals dells and put a Rhino Skin on it. Didn't smash that one but then I was on slickdeals.net and saw an X50v for $200 with warranty, case and somethin else. WHOA! I couldn't resist not to mention its the 2nd best pocket pc ever, which was what introduced me to Aximsite.. Then once WM5 came out and you couldn't upgrade the X50v to WM5 Aximsite suggested that we complain and say that I needed WM5, and they promised an upgrade when I bought the x50v. Well the warranty allowed me to get the x51v which I have to this day...smashed the screen on that one too..but an Aximsite member fixed it for me for a great price! After I smashed the X51v, I couldn't go pocket pc-less however I was with VzW and at the time their PPC Phone selection sucked so I bought Motorola Q9m. I missed the touchscreen dearly so when I saw the AT&T Tilt on sale for $79 on Amazon with a $50 mail-in rebate...I could resist no longer. The Tilt was the single greatest piece of electronic equipment I've own so far but no VGA like on my beloved Axim x51v. I would LOVE to have a Fuze now as it does almost everything the Tilt does but with VGA. I'd sacrifice some Tilt for some VGA.
Previous: T-Mobile SDA (unlocked and on Cingular/AT&T)
Other previous PDAs (no phone built in):
Viewsonic V37 (got it free from Microsoft, can't beat that)
Compaq iPaq H3650
Sharp Pocket PC (circa 2000), one of the first windows ce devices with a full keyboard and pcmcia slot, not much memory though, and it was volatile - don't let the battery run down!

My first device was a used Palm m100 in 2003, followed shortly thereafter by a Palm m130. After that, I moved on to a Tungsten E|2 which I used for three years, and then finally got the iPaq 210 I currently use in February of this year.
My first pda was a Palm Zire 21. It replaced the paper calendar books I had carried for many, many years. I used the Palm for a couple years and learned how handy it was, and how useful the sync features could be.
I lurked at AximSite for a while--well before registering, and began to think about the pocket computers available. I realized that I could accomplish with a pocket pc all that I usually might do with a notebook computer (which I didn't have but was considering). In 2006 I bought a Dell Axim x51v instead of a notebook, and I'm still using it now. It is wonderful!
Oh my. I have no idea of the complete history of my PDA use but it goes WAY back.
I think my first PDA was probably the Cassiopeia A-10 HPC. It was version 1 of the Windows Mobile OS (Windows CE 1.0) and I loved it! It had a screamin' 44mhz processor and 2mb of RAM. :)
I also had a Sharp SE-500 which is just an amazing little unit at the time. It was pocketable but still had a built-in modem. I just remember that the screen at the time was simply awesome! All the other screens looked like grey/green on a darker gray/green but the Sharp screen was so much more vivid.
Almost all of the rest of my PDA history has been with Windows Mobile units. I used to love HPC devices with their larger screens and usable keyboards. The first PPC I had that I liked was the Casio E-115. I actually still have it. My kids play songs on it sometimes. :)
Honorable mentions would include the HP Jornada HPCs and the Psion netbook Pro - original netbook? ;)
I still have and use my Dell Axim x50v. Its a great unit but I really need to upgrade, don't I. ;)

I've had quite a few over the years.
Nokia 1610, I wouldn't have called it a smart phone.
Psion Organiser II
Psion 3
Psion Revo
A couple of Palms, don't remember which.
Nokia 6600, still right beside me now.
Two Nokia Communicators, the black and white and then the colour version.
Qtek 9100
a couple of different Siemens and Ericssons, that I never liked.
Nokia internet tablet
Axim X30
Axim X51v
HTC 7500
I'm sure there are a few I have missed, but those are the ones that spring to mind.
I had a Palm III when I was I think 8 years old, learned how do everything on it. From their it was a Palm V i think, then I had a X3i, x50V, replace by dell with an X51V, then my current pda an HTC Vogue.

First PDA was the Dell Axim X5 Advanced, purchased at the same time I registered with this site. Soon after added GPS (cabled) and memory cards to the device. Later upgraded the GPS to a CF model to eliminate the wires and purchased a wireless CF card. After the CF GPS failed I returned to a cabled solution. I have just recently purchased a dedicated GPS (Magellan Crossover) that has been unlocked to reveal the WinCE 5.0 system which now allows other GPS programs and softwares to run on it. Used some Sony Clies at work but only because I was forced to.
My "Devography" - kinda short, but they've all been heavy hitters in the WinMo lineup:
Motorola MPx220 > Qtek 9100 (HTC Wizard) > Cingular 8125 (HTC Hermes) > HTC TyTN II (HTC Kaiser) (Current)
I started with the Axim 5 until I dropped it and broke the screen. Then, the week before Dell stopped selling the Axim's I bought an Axim x51v. I love it, but am thinking about a converged Windows Mobile device like the HTC Touch pro or Fuze.
Just so you know, my idea of "a couple of paragraphs" is usually what everybody else thinks of as "The Great American Novel"...
I started out as a Handspring user, owning three Visors, one of which only lasted a couple months before I dropped it just the wrong way and cracked the screen. I even bought the Sprint hardware add-on for the Visor which let me convert it into a phone, essentially the precursor to the Treo. Thus began my love affair with the Palm OS, something which continued with my first true Palm product, the Tungsten T. I LOVED the slide-out writing area, so much that I eventually upgraded to the T3. That's where Palm love affair ended, as I experienced many software issues with the OS and repeated resets. Less than a year after getting the T3, I changed teams and got my first Windows Mobile device, a Dell Axim x30.
The x30 was a beauty - 624Mhz processor, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, SD slot...I went nuts with that handheld, even buying the 2006 Smartphone & Pocket PC software pack, which I still put to good use. Best $199 I ever spent.
Earlier this year, I upgraded to my first smartphone, the AT&T Tilt. My only complaint is the video driver issue - I'd like to take better videos with my phone than what I currently am able to do. Other than that, my Tilt is my "hip office" and practically carries my life on it.
Sadly, I have no smartphone history. But hey, you never know, this context may remedy that!
My PDA History:
I started with the Palm IIIi, and couldn't believe that I could actually have my calendar in my pocket! The biggest surprise, however, was how handy it was to have my contacts as well. I did find the beastie pretty bulky, and within a year and a half had a Palm V. This is the time that I also really got going with third party apps.
The jump to color and the Dell Axim X5 was a great one. I loved the functionailty of the Pocket PC, plus all of the gadgets and gizmos you could add via the CF slot. It took me another year and a half to move to the Dell Axim x51v, which has been my faithful companion ever since. The most novel feature of this machine is the VGA out feature.
Hard to believe that my history is that short, given the number of years that I have been using a PDA...
