I don't really have much of a PDA/Smartphone history.
However I am very interested in them.
I have a Palm Centro (AT&T) right now, and that is the only Smartphone that I have ever had.
I would love to have a Windows Mobile Smartphone, but most of them cost to much for me to afford, so I had to settle on a free Centro with a 2 year contract.
That is all the history I have with Smartphones, I would love for it to get better! :)
This is pretty crazy, and now that I look at it... I clearly have issues. As it stands, this is my history over the course of the last 11 years. Thank goodness for eBay.
Pre-Palm Era:
I began with the Casio BOSS and Sharp Zaurus (do these count?) Everything entered by hand, no PC connection. Very limited.
Palm Era:
Then came 1999, and that all changed with the Palm III. Easy text entry, syncing with my PC, but already limited memory ( a recurring theme for me), so I upgraded the Palm III myself, adding the additional memory... and creating a Palm IIIx. But shortly thereafter there was color... and I had to have a Palm IIIc.
A few months into the IIIc stint, the memory card expandable HandEra 330 with improved resolution came on the scene. It was ahead of its time, and if they had found a way to make a color one, they would probably still be around.
Sony Era:
Sony then entered the Palm market like gangbusters, with color, great screen resolutions and memory card expandibility. The Sony Clie N610C was my first, followed by the Sony Clie NR70V. The NR70V's clamshell form factor was great, but the proprietary memory sticks were not.
Sony Interlude:
I dipped my toe into the world of PocketPCs for about six months with the Jornada 565. It was a great first PocketPC, but ultimately, I was disillusioned by some PocketPC stability issues and lack of memory.
Sony Era II:
I have a very brief fling with a Sony Clie SJ33, but moved on to the Sony Clie NX73V very quickly to return to one of my favorite form factors, but again was ultimately put off by the memory stick and Sony-Palm quirkiness.
Back to Palm:
I accepted a work-issued Palm M515 (more RAM and an SD card slot) while I caught my breath and surveyed the PDA landscape. And lo, what do I see on the horizon but a newcomer...
My first Axim:
The Axim X5 brought me back to PocketPC and gave me newfound appreciation for the power and diversity of the platform, as well as two forms of memory card expansion and much joy. I still have my X5.
Back to Palm (yet again):
There's a lot to be said for the overall stability and unchanging features of the Palm OS from that standpoint. I quickly jumped from Palm Tungsten T, to the Palm Tunsten T2 and finally to the Palm Tungsten T3 (second best Palm PDA ever - great screen, great resolution, quirkly engineering.)
A Period of Convergence:
Enter the Palm Treo 650. Convergence. But the OS was not as stable as I was accustomed to... so on to the Kyocera 7135. It had the same OS, but better implemetation. It represents the best Palm-Phone convergence I've ever used relative to it's competitors...
Back to Axim:
Then came the Axim X30. Awesome form factor, good stability, but it couldn't match the...
Back to Palm (one last time?):
...Tungsten TX, which is arguably the best Palm ever. If they had made it into a phone with the same form factor/resolution, it may have captured the market even better than the Treo. Better yet, they could have positioned it beside the Treo... but then Dell lands the counter-punches...
Yikes. Back to Axim (Again?):
The Axim X50 quickly gave way to the Axim X51V, which is the Best. PocketPC. Ever. (for me). Possibly the best PDA ever. Power, grace, resolution, expandibilty. Perfect.
Work feeds me Blackberries:
Management leads to a Blackberry 7250, followed 8 months later by the Blackberry 7130 (Suretype is not that bad, really) which I supplemented with a Palm Zire 71 for a camera and task management (for which the BB was woefully inadequate).
I Rebel Against Blackberries:
I've had enough of a two-device solution and opt to grab the Samsung i730, which has a great form factor, but I couldn't ever get it stable enough for comfort... and the lack of corporate e-mail made certain that resistance was futile...
The Borg:
I succumb to the powers of a Blackberry 8830, which is the best Blackberry I have used thus far, and is the device I held onto for the longest I have ever held a device (1.5 years). It featured easy corporate and personal e-mail, quick browser, instant access to all info, and was stable and robust... but was also short on memory and its range of capabilities. So my Axim X51V was resurrected to work side-by-side. Two devices isn't very streamlined, however...
Today:
My company finally opened up Exchange syncing 6 months ago, and 5 minutes after they did, I became the proud owner of an HTC XV6800, which is the best converged device I've used thus far... It has more power than my Blackberries, but (one obviously shouldn't be surprised) I'm now really feeling limited by memory and screen resolution... so the Fuze/TouchPro is on my radar somewhere down the road...
A lot of devices, yes (28, I think). But note, only two of them were purchased new - my Palm III and my Palm TX. That said, I think my XV6800 is great, but I would love to try a new device when it was new. It's been awhile. I'd love to put the Fuze though its paces.

Well i am 13, and ever since i saw my first pda in sky mall magazine when i was like 8, i have loved them. When i was 9 i got my first, a Toshiba PD-800E. It was awesome but i had no clue how to use it. I eventually moved on to bigger better pdas, once i saw the treo 600 on tv. I begged and pleaded but never got it, so for Christmas one year i got a palm tungsten. that broke after about a year and i got the tungsten c , i like all kids needed the new thing so finally i got the tungsten tx top of the line. Now around this time i got a cell phone. once the tx broke, i took my dads treo and unlocked it because for some reason it only worked with a certain sim card. eventually i gave that to my older brother who of course broke it, so for the next year i was stuck with a crappy flip phone.next i bought a dell axim x30 from a friend (the best pda ever )(besides fuze) Now i dont know if iPhones count as pdas but if they do on one faithful day in disney world when my dad was getting off the roller coaster he found one and gave it to me. I would like the fuze becasue the iphone well SUCKS, !0!SOMETIMES!0!
My very first PDA was a Sharp Wizard OZ-630 with 256KB of memory. It still works! I use it from time to time as a desktop calculator and paperweight. I still have all my old contacts and notes stored on it.
I also have a Hewlett Packard 200LX with 2MB of memory. It was used to program the Progressive Meter signs in the Casino that I worked for.
My current PDA is an ATT/Tilt. This phone has it all. I can't put it down. There are so many applications and customizations available for it. Some of my applications are:WM6.1, Pandora(see XDA for the cab file), Resco Radio, Core Player, HHCHome customizer, Memmaid, Advanced Config, and dozens more. So far it's one of the best toys ever, not perfect by any means, but the release of the Fuze just demonstrates that these devices are getting better and better
My PDA history is very short: I have a HTC Cruiser from April 2008.
The experience with this Pocket PC shows me the advantages of a PDA and transform me, from a laptop addicted to a PPC one.
I intend to buy a HTC HD in the near future.

It all started with a Kyocera 6035. I loved the idea of a PDA phone combo. It was huge, but it was also hugely awesome. Especially the wireless access to data (albeit at awfully slow GPRS speeds). I really like the Palm OS, Graphiti was easy, Fitaly was easier. It was a really nice device. I kept it for several years, finally upgrading to a Treo 650. Wow, color! And 320x320 is super sharp. The device is nicely speedy, and Edge data is a great upgrade. The limited memory and OS bugs drive me nuts, and I can't believe I upgraded to a phone with no voice dialing. Bluetooth would be cool if batteries lasted long enough (or when it became a necessity because my headphone jack broke). The OS bugs in my 650 and lack of a PalmOS device with GPS & WiFi lead me to the dark side of Windows Mobile. Voice dialing again is great. Multi-tasking is useful. Plenty of built in memory. Adding an 8GB storage card is great. Still, it's sad how much slower this device feels than either of my Palms. I really miss the front keyboard as the time it takes to rotate the screen is often painful. It's handling of IMAP blows. Flashing ROM is so painful I avoid it even though I know it will fix a few issues I'm having. At least it's more stable than the 650, and 3G is very nice. I can't say I'm really satisfied. Part of me wants an iPhone now, but I know that will suck as a PDA. Maybe Palm will redeem themselves with their new OS? Maybe a new Fuze will convince me that WM isn't all suck? I don't know.
As for true PDA devices, I've never really seen the need. I've always bought a smartphone. I've borrowed a few, that's part of how I started loving on Palm devices. I borrowed an Axim for a while which is where I started hating on WM devices. Really, I wish I had a device like the 650, with Bluetooth Voice Dialing, with a stable OS and a good web browser. I also wish Palm development was as simple as .NET compact framework (not that I've written as much WM code as I thought I would).
In reply to the Win A Fuze Contest My history as a PDA owner is simply that I received a Tilt for my birthday Feb 08.I have became a member of XDA as most links pointed in their direction. In doing so I have downloaded most current app's
as they apply to the Tilt,TouchFlo etc.I have downloaded a new ROM for a Fuze when I came across Mobiltysites link to a "free" Fuze.Unfortunately it only pertains to "New" att customers.I have it ready and waiting on a 1 gig HP usb Flash Drive. All I need now is a "Fuze":) Always remember to utilize USA electricity currents versus European as a Nazi stole a vibrator from a prisoner and was found electrocuted in a hotel room:hide:!!!! Quite upset they stated :realmad:"it took three days just to wipe the smile off his face"before they could bury him!!!!!Have a good one!
started out with an cheap hp pda, then to an axim x51v which i adored. i had an 8gb cf card in it so it served as music player and organizer. But when i wanted to get a new phone there was no sense in keeping the axim. I moved to a touch vogue with an 8gb micro sd it serves my needs pretty well.
I first bought an iPAQ rx1950 in collage to keep up with all of my assignments and work. I fell in love with wm and never looked back. Near the beginning of 07 my beloved iPAQ stopped syncing to my pc and I convinced my self I need to drop another $400 or $500 into a new one. I looked into getting the new iPAQ 111 series but decided to go with something that would also make phone calls. I got an ATT Tilt and don't know what I did with out it. After buying my new Tilt I began experimenting with different programs and came across Tilt Site where the info was plentiful and helpful.
It is a short list but i make them last. When I saw the Tilt was being replaced I was a little disappointed but after playing around with the Fuse in an ATT store I realized how much I wanted one but knew I would be unsuccessful in convincing my wife of the NEED for one.
I have really enjoyed this site as well as Tilt Site.
Thanks and Pick me please! I never win anything. My high school football record was 8 wins out of 4 years. . . I know that sucks!
My love for PDA started with SONY Clie NX then 2 weeks later I got the Clie NZ-90. But later I got very frustrated with the PALM OS, so I jumped to the Dark side with Dell Axim X50V with Windows Mobile, joined Aximsite 2 days after I got the device. Moved on to the X51V and loved every minute of it. However, I was very disappointed when Dell said they are exiting the PDA Business. So I sold my X51V to get the HP iPAQ 211 but it was seriously disappointing device, so I returned it and didn't have a device since. I didn't like the options they were offering with the Smartphone. I couldn't live without the VGA screen and etc. However, I think now HTC is pioneering Windows Mobile devices. So I hope I win HTC Fuze.
