It all started the year they discontinued the Palm IIIe. I got it for Christmas and when the day came, I already had maybe half the RAM filled with applications I had downloaded while waiting. Among my favourites, aside from games, was OmniRemote so I could use the PDA as a universal remote (still an amazing use even today, though IR isn't as common). I also used iSilo for e-books a lot. That was my faithful companion for a very long time until one day I saw the Staples flyer and the arrival of a new Palm Tungsten model, which caught me by surprise as I hadn't read rumours of it. It was the Tungsten E, with a shining colour screen, a whopping 32 MB of RAM and MP3 playback (my personal killer app). The headphone jack is sadly broken, despite my repeated efforts to fix it, so it's mostly on the back burner and I'm stuck with my solid but boring Nokia 6806, who can at least brag a USB cable in the box and sync software for Outlook. I was a Palm devotee for many years until they repeatedly failed to deliver with OS 6, and now I'm looking forward to the chance to see what Microsoft has manage to do with Windows Mobile now that the hardware really is powerful enough to run it.

Wow... how far back do I go??? I guess my very first PDA was a no-name 'electronic organizer' which a 36-character LCD display. This was followed by a Sharp Wizard, then onto the HP iPAQ 1950 (I think it was) then the Jornada 560, then a Dell Axim X50v.

I got into phone/pda combos first with Motorola RAZR, then a Pharos 500. That was followed by another iPAQ and some time on a Blackberry that my client/boss forced me to use. I'm currently using an AT&T Tilt, but have also tested an HTC Touch Pro and the new HP910c.

[guess I'm either getting old or have switched too many times -- I'm having trouble remembering all the units I've worked with over the last few years!)

my first pda was a psion 3 then i took a break for a while until the ipaq 1910 which was the first time i got really excited about a windows mobile pda because of its small size and thin form factor combined with a great screen.
eventually i moved to windows mobile phones and i have had about 30-40 models since.

I started out with a Handspring Visor Platinum. Moved to a Dell X5 Advanced when that died, and just recently moved to a Glofiish M810 (thanks to Mobilitysite.com) when the X5 died.

I started w/Symbian S60. Quite amazing what one could do w/out touchscreen or QWERTY keyboard. After a coupla yrs & a coupla Nokias I moved to two of SE's UIQ 3.0 devices briefly. Have made the switch to WM and am very happy; I've found my final OS. Currently using the HTC TyTN 2, and SE Xperia X1.

Smartphones:

Used to be a Palm fan but was tired of carryinh a PDA & phone so I gave the Tilt a try. Love it and still use it. Does everything my Pilot did plus more.

Chris, Thanks for all you have done with this site. I got my X3 early in 2003 mostly for use with maps and thru Aximsite got an education.
Since then I use it to run my business including scheduling work and appointments and spread sheets. Could not live without cut and paste.
At that time (2003)I did not realize the site was not 1 year old yet. I visit every day just to try to keep up with the technology but it moves very fast.
At this point I am trying to select a new device, maybe a phone, but it has to be as good as the Axim.

My 10 year PDA/Smartphone history started in 1998 when a Philips Velo 1 (Windows CE 1.0!) was purchased for me as a company bonus. After one replacement for a defective hinge, the second one bit the dust about 8 months later. That was okay, because I knew something way better was coming – the HP Jornada 680! This device served me very well for a couple of years. I loved the ability to type on it, connect it to a printer, and project PowerPoint presentations using a VGA-out card. My first Pocket PC was the HP Jornada 568, long about December of 2001. Another great device that I used for almost 3 years. I was really excited to use my new HP iPAQ hx4700, which I purchased the week it came out (September 2004). I still use it today.

After seeing converged devices come out, I briefly tried a HP iPAQ 6300, but returned it within 2 weeks. My company then purchased a Palm Treo 600 for me, and subsequently a Palm Treo 650. As we decided to standardize on Windows Mobile, I converted to a T-Mobile MDA. By now, I was the “phone guy” in the office, and received a new T-Mobile Dash. Our company is still buying Dashes for new employees. Along the way I picked up a used Palm Treo 680, as well as an AT&T Tilt (which I unlocked to use on T-Mobile).

My parents gave me my first PDA, an Axim X5, as a graduation gift, when I discoverd I could not run updated versions of my favorite programs, I ugraded to an X51v, had the RAM upgrade installed, and I have used it ever since. The upgrade was about three years ago, with the initial X5 being about five years ago.

My dad bought me an HP Jornada 540 when I was in 8th grade.. 9 years ago now. I used the crap out of that thing and eventually the screen stopped working intermittently after 2 or 3 years, then the touchscreen went wonky, then the charger stopped working, then the power supply stopped working entirely so it was about time to move on.
I ended up buying a Tilt early this year and was able to use half of my old software from the Jornada, which was nice. Although the Tilt is 4 times faster and has 15 times the RAM, it doesn't feel any faster sadly.

My first PDA was the original PalmPilot. After that came another Palm, followed by a couple of HP devices until the H6300 smartphone. Somewhere in there was also an Audiovox SMT5600.

And finally today - the AT&T Tilt.
