My pda history (Short but sweet) well not really there are some way cooler PDA's out there that I have never seen (only read about them here on this great site)
I was given an iPaq to play with, don't even know what model it was, by a friend, after using it for a couple of weeks I decided I needed me one of these fancy gadgets, but nothing wimpy. Research led me to the Axim, not long before Dell discontinued the line. So I ordered an x51, whilst waiting for it to arrive, I found this place. Since i've acquired an X5 which I just gave away to a mate, and of course the X51v that I bought through the site. Haven't felt the need to go to a converged device yet, although the new HTC models are really tempting me at the moment. I'd even settle for a tilt :D
Was given a Compaq IPAQ 3950 in 2003. Still have it and it still works (except the battery last about 50 mins...) No WiFi so it's just a paper weight now (and occasional remote control - love that NEVO).
Upgraded to the Axim x50 in 2005. A beautiful machine. Not a durable as the iPaq however (for me at least). Cracked its screen twice... doh!
Now I just have an eee pc for mobile computing and my LG Viewty as my media playing / web browsing/ camera /phone.
I started with a HP Jornada 540, that I loved and used a lot.
Then bought an X50v on Ebay. It ran WM5, and had to get the touchscreen replaced. The touchscreen was OK afterwards, but WM5 was not, and I was reluctant to downgrade to 2003.
So I upgraded to an X51v. It is running WM6.1 and I am happy now.
From original Palm Pilot to hopefully the new HTC Fuze
Having had an Atari 1200XL when I was 13, it was no surprise to be graduating to the portable Palm Pilot as a young adult. I went through almost every Palm iteration and became addicted to having my entire life neatly organized in a palm sized computer.
After nearly a decade went by I discovered Aximsite.com and it persuaded me to move to the dark side - and that's when I ventured into Windows Mobile 5 - I became an avid reader and was attracted by the seemingly endless functionality that WM5 offered in contrast to the more limited Palm OS. I patiently waited until the new Axim X51v was released and purchased it the day it came out. Thereafter, I spent a small fortune in s/w and accessories to get the most out of it and that I did. My trusty old axim got me out of a lot of tough spots - anywhere from being able to quickly respond to urgent business matters to being able to make and receive free voip calls to the US while traveling throughout Europe and Asia. It was also great to be able to watch all my cable channels from anywhere I travelled. It's usefulness continues to this day as my world travels are greatly enhanced by the assistance of the Garmin Mobile XT Bluetooth GPS.
However, as WM5 became more limited and it became impractical to carry so many devices in my briefcase - my axim x51v became a fixture in my car as a dedicated GPS. For calendar/phones/email I stuck to whatever my firm used and as far as personal cell phones, I stuck with the RAZRs from the V3 to the V9. However, I'm now ready and hoping to replace my personal RAZR2 V9, my BT GPS, and corporate IPhone 3G with the new HTC Fuze.
Since Dell abandoned the PDAs/smartphone business, I've kept on coming back to aximsite and other sites to see if any new devices resembling the powerful X51v have been introduced ... and low and behold the HTC Fuze has come to the rescue!!! This takes me back to the early days of the x51v and I'm hoping I can keep my self from spending another small fortune in more s/w and accessories for the Fuze. The Fuze will also make me return to aximsite the way I did when the x51v was King. It's great to be back! Cheers. :)
I started off thinking that I couldn't figure out why anyone would want a PDA. I could remember everything that I needed. As my job duties changed I realized that my memory wasn't going to work to keep me organized.
My first PD was a single sheet of paper. I kept phone numbers that I needed but didn't use on a regular basis. On the other side of this paper I was my To-Do list. Then it was kept neatly folder in my pocket. It was very limitted in space, and it got damage (Went through the washer).
My next PDA was had a much larger capacity. It was a small (2" x 3") memo pad. This worked great. After a couple of weeks I had exceeded it capacity as well.
Then I switched to the Mead spiral memo pad. This was a very good solution. Unfortunately I filled it up. So I got a second one, then third, then fourth. Retrieval capabilities became overwhelming. So I knew that I needed to upgrade once more.
In the late summer of 2006 I upgraded to the Axim X51v. I loved it, still do and use it everyday. I have flashed the ROM and upgrade the software several times. It is a keeper.
I got hook with PDA when I bought my brand new X51V in 2005, I carry with
me all the time. I am so afraid that 1 day it may not be working anymore that
caused me to buy another used one couple months ago as security blanket.
I even learn how to re flash to wm6.1. I had full working GPS on the Axims too!
Surprisingly I don't even have a cell phone. HTC Fuze may be starting
another good thing.
Newton - I think I still have this one lying around somewhere...
Jornada 548
iPaq Rz2xxx - sorry I dont remember the model #
iPaq hx2751
HTC 8125
HTC 8525
HTC Fuze - after I win this :approve:
I've tried just about everything windows mobile related and I write software both at work(mainly for Symbol(now motorola) PDT8100 series) and personal for the windows mobile platform.
Here's my history(using ebay to trade up every time helped to keep the costs down):
I got an AT&T Tilt/HTC TyTN II as my first PocketPC/Smartphone ever this summer. My next PocketPC phone will be an HTC running Windows Mobile as well, thanks to the great experience I am having with the Tilt.
Wow, my history is very long. It starts when I used some of my precious college fund to a Palm III. Boy that was a sweet device. I probably drove my wife crazy because we were newly weds and I spent so many hours on it. I would download every hack I could find and every freeware just to test it for kicks. Well, needless to say my precious Palm III lasted only 2 months. :-( I took it back to the store that I bought it from and made a stink until they gave the the newly released Palm V. I thought that I had died and gone to heaven. I spent the next year an a half being Palms best recruiter. But, my life was about to change....
HP and iPaq released the first "Pocket PC" and I spent all my free time drooling over these devices until my wife surprised me with my Jornada 495 (I think, it has been too long ago). My wife has regretted that day ever since. I life with Palm was nothing compared to my life with a Pocket PC. I don't think I slept for days. It was love at first sight and has never stopped.
I had a CompUSA 2 year replacement on my first Jornada and somehow my handhelds always broke before the two years was up and I got the best haldheld on the market every time. I must proudly say that they actually did brake unlike many of my friends, because I used my handhelds so much and for everything. You will never see me without my handheld form the time I wake up until the time I got to bed at night. It is truly a sick fetish that I have.
I have owned everything from Palm to HTC. Here are some that I remember:
Jornada -4 models total
iqaq -4 models
Casio -The last model before they left the market
Toshiba - The 4" screen with VGA hacks (wow that was a fun one)
HTC Advantage (My favorite device of all to date)
I have had more but I can't remember all of them. I also don't remember all the model numbers because I call all my handhelds "iPaq" because our first daughter's first word was "iPaq." She made me the happiest father on the planet. She said "iPaq" and I was floored, and I said go get my iPaq and she went and brought it to me and said "iPaq." I could of died that day and my wife could of too but for a different reason, because her first word was not Mommy.
Anyway, all I can say is that I have had a wonderfully fun history and I hope that the best is still to come.
Got my X50v for Christmas '04. I had been a good boy that year, and my wife (with lots of hints) made sure I had a happy Christmas.
It started having digitizer problems and was replaced by Dell in Feb '05.
I used it for everything - GPS, Video, MP3 player, appointments, browsing, etc.
That one worked perfectly until this past August. I had it in my pocket during a party when there was lots of dancing going on and the next morning I noticed that it couldn't find my CF card nor my WiFi. I'm guessing I had dislodged something internally. We were an older crowd, and there was lots of "bumping" going on! (Ah the 70s).
Found a slightly used X51v on eBay that came with lots of nice extras. Now with a X51v, I loaded WM6.1. What a nice combination. I upgraded my GPS software to OnCourse Navigator 8, due to Chris' glowing review. And, it is great. But, I need more memory to get it to use TTS.
Last Thursday I sent it off to PPCTechs to have them upgrade the memory. It is due back tomorrow. Great folks to deal with.
I've been going through withdrawal. I can't wait for it to show up.
