The Following User Says Thank You to Chris Leckness For This Useful Post:
I have tended to keep my PDA & phone separate - I've been in PDA's since the HP200LX came out, and have had a long line of clunky phones. My only convergence device was the first Blackberry that also had a phone, but the phone was crap.
My first PDA was the Dell Axim X5 Advanced. I still have it to this day. I bought many accessories for it. A bigger battery, cases, bluetooth card, wifi card. It was so fun. Of course as soon as I got my X5, I signed up with Aximsite. I got so much info from here and it made owning a PDA worth the price of admission. I was able to connect to to my phone to get internet everywhere. At the time it was my only portable device so I used it for music, videos etc. I actually convinced a lot of people to get a pda and even given an X51 as a gift one year.
It was time to move on to changing my normal flip phone to a Smartphone. I bought the XV6800 early this year. While my X5 has taken a backseat, I still use it around the house for light websurfing and to play all my emulators. Anyway, I recently updated my XV6800 to Win Mo 6.1 and enjoying it a lot. I have a two year contract with Verizon so I will not get a phone until the contract ends. But seeing all these new devices with bigger memory, it make make those two years feel a little longer. But just like my X5, my XV6800 is getting tweaked daily. I love being able to get my emails as they arrive and loving the Rev. A speeds. Windows Mobile might not have the best interface, but it is so customizable I would hate to loose all that function with another OS. Ok thanks for reading.
I was never an avid user of smartphones. I didn't have much need for them. I had used them before, and I like them, they just didn't fit my needs.
And then came along the t-mobile sda. A simple yet useful smartphone, it had everything I needed...email, internet, picture messaging, storage card for my music.. It was (and still is) perfect! Sadly though, I grew out of it. I made my own email server, bought a domain, and was replying to many emails. I needed a keyboard.
From there, I went to the i-mate k-jam. It was an excellent device(albeit a little chubby), with essentially the same innards as my former sda. This however, proved to be a bit of a problem. While the device worked alright, the 200mhz cpu was a bit underpowered. So I decided to upgrade.
On to the tilt! One of my favorites of all time. It had absolutely everything I needed. wifi, gps, keyboard, microsd slot...and it was a gorgeous looking device. I loaded it up with all the music I could, added tomtom gps, synced via exchange, and life was wonderful! However, after a tragic accident, my tilt lives no more. (In case you were wondering, while getting out of my bathing suit at the beach, I placed my phone -temporarily- on the lip of my trunk. After I finished changing, I slammed my trunk shut. Only to find that I had just smashed my poor little tilt in the face. It was a terrible day for me.)
So then I went BACK to the sda. While this device was sufficient for daily use, I was spoiled by the keyboard, and I wasn't sure if another tilt was the way to go(the touch diamond was just released and the touch pro was moments away)...
So I opted for the iphone. While some in the community would deem this to be a traitorous move, in my line of work, it's just research. People ask me questions, it's my job to know. So why not? The interface was wonderful, it's an ipod as well(which I'm familiar with), and it has excellent aftermarket support. I unlocked it(I have t-mobile), and started using it. It did the job, and it did it fairly well, but the on-screen keyboard blows. I don't mind it for quick things, but ONLY having an on-screen keyboard was a terrible thing to put up with. So I kept it until I was ready for an account upgrade...and bought the g1!!!
I am IN NO WAY a g1 fanboy. I love it, I think it's great, but I really miss windows mobile. The 3g speed is pretty good, the interface is slick...but it's really premature. It hasn't really developed much over the past month or two. Given the opportunity, I would jump right back on the winmo bandwagon. There are other devices that look good and work great, but man....exchange sync rules my world.
So that's where I stand today. I'm using the G1 as my daily driver, T-mobile SDA and iPhone as backups, and a broken tilt in my drawer(for sentimental purposes). I'll probably grab the fuze if I can get it for a reasonable price.
I started out with an iPAQ 3850, got an iPAQ 5455 when they came out, then a Dell Axim X51v. I got my first converged device for Christmas last year--an AT&T Tilt. I still keep the X51v synched in case my Tilt fails.
I had a Palm m100 when I was younger, and used it off and on. And then 2 years ago I got an iPaq rx3715 that I still have, but need to retire soon (earphone jack doesn't work and power button going out) And then when I switch to AT&T next month, I'm hoping to get a smartphone
Axim x5
Motorola MPX
Blackberry 8900
Ipaq 8945
HTC Kaiser
I know I am forgetting a couple in there.. Been a registered member here (aximsite/mobilitysite) since 2005.Handhelds then were the latest greatest thing then , now I see them everywhere.
I started out with a casio BE300 and soon found that it wouldn't do all I wanted so I bought a Ipaq1945 which after about 3 years I broke the screen so I bought a Axim X50 mid and still use it today mostly for a GPS device. own a Palm treo 600 a cingular 8125, a Palm treo 750 and now a Tilt and use it with a redfly.
Just waiting for justification and money of course to move on up. Although the Tilt coupled with my redfly is a hard combination to beat.
I have always been into computers, but the Tilt from AT&T was my first PDA style phone.
I currently have 2 Xperia on order for my wife and son for Christmas, I haven't decided yet what I'll buy for my self.
Hey Chris, thanks for the great contest....this is the one hoping and praying for. My PDA/Smartphone history isn't even remotely close to your I'm afraid, but still I've had great fun with them.
My first PDA was a odd little beast by the name of Compaq Ipaq 3150. I say odd because the thing had a monochrome and as as Pocket PCs went that was a bit unheard of. The thing had a lot of grunt and I never ever felt like other PDAs out at the time had more CPU power than my Ipaq 3150. The monochrome screen was a major downer in most lighting conditions though as it was generally very hard to read what was on screen.
I remember like all the 3000 series Compaq Ipaqs, my 3150 had an all metal body which felt great but was damn near as slick as ice, which was a bit unfortunate. That slick feeling went away when you needed to use a compact flash card as the device required your to slide on a plastic case that had the compact flash card slot built into it.
My next Pocket PC was the Dell Axim X51v. Needless to say this was a MAJOR upgrade from the Ipaq 3150. I went from a 320x240 Monochrome screen to a 640x480 full color beauty of a screen and an oh so sweet 624mhz cpu vs the old 204mhz cpu of the Ipaq. The dell was and I think still is the PDA to rule all PDAs. In fact the only down I can really think of with the dell of hand is that its only 802.11b which means having it on your 802.11g network will slow the whole network down.
After that I got a Samsung Blackjack i607. The i607 was maybe my first disappointment in the Windows Mobile/Pocket PC world. The phone sucked battery life like there was no tomorrow and then to add insult to injury developed some sort of antenna/reception problem.
I'm now on an AT&T Tilt, which has served me really well. Even though its a QVGA device so things aren't as good looking as on my old Axim, I've found battery life to be much better and the keyboard is REALLY good. At first screen rotation was a bit slow, but after a custom ROM its now lightning fast.
Well I guess that about sums up my PDA/Smartphone history.
I started out with an iPaq 2210. Which still lives today, it's my girlfriends' PDA - I changed the side handles with red aluminum ones, as the rubber ones fell off.
Moved on to a Dell Axim x50. Still have it, but not using it. Used it with a bluetooth GPS in my car, but it ran out of juice regularly, and reinstalling Navigon each time (cause it's a WM5 device) just became too tedious.
Also had a Qtek 8310. Which I gave to my girlfriends' ex husband. He's very fond of it.
I had various Nokias in between, N73, E61, but I'm really only partial to the build quality of Nokia devices, not the way they work - they're too limiting.
Today I have an iPhone (1st gen), which I think is absolutely brilliant.
Who knows, perhaps the Fuze next ? I'm always looking for the better device. I had a Nokia E71 because of the keyboard, and the keyboard is actually one of the things I'm missing on the iPhone.

- Handspring Visor Platinum - Batteries died, wiped everything out.
- HP iPaq hx4705 - Sold to get my next device.
- Cingular 8125 - I still miss that phone. Dropped it one too many times though.
- Cingular 8525 - Replacement once I finally got the insurance money from my 8125.
- Palm Treo 750 - Decided I wanted a different form factor, and the 8525 was having hardware button issues. So I picked it up, and other than a bad battery and fried charger right off the bat, good phone till I started having issues with the keypad.
- Palm Treo 750 - My current version. Much more cooperative. Seems to be slightly different hardware. Only thing that's starting to drive me nuts now is the 240x240 display. I don't mind square display, but I'd love 320x320 or wouldn't even mind going back to a full sized display like the 8125/8525.
I could include the Audiovox SMT5600 in there too. That was actually after the iPAQ and before the 8125. I still have that phone too, and use it as a spare. Although, ask me where it is now, I couldn't tell you, but it did come in handy when I did a 10 mile race back in August. Thousands of people make it difficult to find one specific person. :D
ETA: My sig is inaccurate, and my 8525, despite the button issues, is currently used for GPS in my truck. So it's still got some usefulness in it.
