GPS has come a long way in the past few years, so, it's hard to imagine future improvements. One thing I'd like to see is a program that goes from auto/road tracking to foot tracking. This would be helpful for getting around malls, amusement parks, and walking unknown downtown areas. Locking in a starting point when you park you car could make returning to it much easier.

I just assume this will become a standard issue in cars, like FM radios. You won't be able to get a car without one.

i envision that in the future any cell phone can be act as a GPS (like iphone) but way more advance. It can help us to id the location, pinpoint our destination. It may even be able interact with the environment.

I see GPS is coming to all mobile devices as a compulsory thing. It will be the same as having camera on mobile phone. Very soon it will be hard to find mobile phone without GPS.

I think GPS devices will only get more advanced and better looking. Before long, I think they'll be standard on smartphones[which it seems they already are]. Maybe one that can also update itself with traffic info would be nice. Also, if it could be turned on all the time and point out interesting places and landmarks as you drive, then it would be useful for trips.

I have had experience with GPSs with my At&t Tilt. It's good sometimes. But most of the time, my device has difficulty in getting locked in.

Perhaps, the future needs to solve this problem in order to allow quicker connections.

It's amazing how many phones now come with gps capabilities. GPS, Ive seen some software for people who like to hike/camp I'd like to see improvement in that area. I have a friend who has an outdoor rubber housed gps device he uses for hiking/camping, so people can track him in case he gets lost.

G'day,
As more converged devices get GPS I hope that more "non-car" functionality would be provided. I think I've read that some packages cater well for those walking. Can be different routes here given one-way roads etc. Catering for buses would be a beaut idea. An example might illustrate. I had to visit a specialist located in a suburb on a long windy bus route in an area I'd never visited before. Had to pay much attention to street signs on the way, matching to a paer directory and the bus map. It would have been lovely to have the PDA GPS alert me prior to the stop closest (by walking route) to his address.

Since it was a nice day I walked back to the nearest main bus exchange rather than wait for the bus. Walking directions would have been good and would have meant I wouldn't have had to carry a paper directory. At least Canberra's is small. Carrying a Sydney or Melbourne directory would have been a significant annoyance on the 1/2 hour walk back.
Cheers and Merry Xmas

It's hard to tell what the future holds. Like many I think we will use gps for locating things or services we want or need but as more vehicles include gps systems in them our need for turn by turn in our phones and pda's will wane.

I don't think it will be much longer before there isn't a mobile device released without GPS on it. Then again, I suspect eventually GPS will be in everything, from our phones and laptops, to the $10 digital watch that lasts forever. :)

I think the GPS is here to stay and will keep getting better. I see it integrated into almost all portable devices in the future.

The future is convergence, and it is already here. I just haven't stepped into the future yet. I've been carrying around a plain vanilla LG cell phone, my Axim X51v, and a blue-tooth GPS receiver, and in truth, I don't use the GPS as often as I could simply because it's a pain in the ass to carry all the equipment around. I've been looking for the "perfect device" for over a year, and I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on an HTC Touch Pro. Wish me luck.

In the future there will be less GPS errors, like when it tell you to drive into a lake.
