I agree with ikepigott.
Phones (where GPS is headed) will be more location-aware, and will alter behavior accordingly.
Your phone will "know" when you're in the office, and switch to vibrate or silent.
Your phone will "know" when you're in a store, and attempt to find coupons or advertised deals.
Your phone will "know" when you're near a restaurant and prompt you with menus and reviews
Your phone will "know" where the best gas prices are within a mile, and will suggest to you when your car bluetooth indicated you're down to a gallon.
Gps will be common place in stand alone units. If the trend continues in its current way. navigation programs for PPC will all but be phased out by most of the major players.
Satellites will be sent to orbit Mars, the moon, etc. so that we can navigate in and between newly formed colonies on those surfaces.
Before that happens, GPS on earth will actually become less used as solar powered beacons along road sides and points of interest simply transmit their known locations to the radio in your phone/PDA.
It amazes me that like GPS even exists. What is GPS's future? I don't think I think that big. Who would have thought 30 years ago we would carry phones that also serves as location devices with maps and aerial photos, and it would be cheap enough for the masses.
forget using little tracker devices for criminals.. use a gps phone. you know where they are at all times, and you can even call them on the phone to verify it's them.. but better than those anklets they give to them..
just a thought. i do't know if they do this now cause i never have had one before, but i think GPS is definately going to go way beyond just telling you how to get some where. it is going to go for tracking things, like lost cell phones, laptops, girl friends, etc.....
:)
just my2cents.

I see other members expressing the location aware features, but with GPS turned ON, the phone (battery) will be dead by the time you are out of the first meeting at work :) I like the idea but the GPS chips should consume less power.
I need an alarm, that goes off based on GPS location, not by time. So, I can have a longer nap if the train is running late ;)
I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a GPS system that looks similar to a BT ear piece. No screen, just the directions straight into your ear.
They may be combined with video goggles, once they have been perfected to work as normal glasses giving you a personal heads up display.
