Another long time supporter is buy GPS Now. Joe Kee and staff have given great support to our communities GPS needs and helped with questions too.
BuyGPSnow.com is happy to give our readers a special gift on behalf of Mobilitysite for our birthday contests. You can win one of three copies of OnCourse Navigator. They also come with a 2GB MicroSD.
To win, leave some thoughts about what you think the future of GPS in relation to our mobile devices is. Where is it going?
On October 31st, we will select 3 winners at random. Thanks for being part of our community.

Wow, that's a long wait. I better put this on my calendar.
It feels to me like converged devices are the way of the future, like it or not. Seems like there's a sizeable segment of consumers who are pressing for phones with built-in GPS and preloaded software (mostly subscription-based) integrated into the OS. Hopefully more intelligent power control of the GPS device will be better implemented so that it would try to grab positional fixes when a GPS app was active and changes in position were detected within the user's particular GSM/CDMA cell to reduce power consumption. Likely the time to fix lag will be continually reduced as well.

Unfortunately, I think the future is dumber. As GPS is pushed to the masses providers will have to dumb-it-down. There will also continue to be the substitution of wireless location technologies for actual GPS satelite systems. Just look at the specs for many of the GPS enabled phones on the market now. Few actually list any details about the GPS such as chipset, TTFF, or power consumption of the GPS. The future will also be to serve maps via data connections, which I oppose.
GPS will provide a number of "useful" functions...
Where is the closest ATM/gas station/bathroom?
Where is the closest X item for sale?
Where are my kids?

The future will be more intregrated GPS units, most phones will have some sort of location tech in it, wether it is AGPS or other, cell carriers will continue to try to push subscription services rather than full programs such as On Course Navigator in order to make more $.

I think integrated GPS units will become the norm. Yeah, carriers will continue to push their subscription services. As cell & wifi coverage hopefully continues to become more universally available, then maybe full programs won't be as necessary. Until you can get to the map via some connection anywhere though, I would still want a program or some option to get offline maps!
How did I ever live without GPS? Paper maps? Pshaw. I am extremely excited to see where GPS is going as technology evolves. I look forward to the day when GPS is standard on every mobile device that comes to market. I look forward to the day when GPS will be standard equipment in automobiles. Really, the possiblities are endless!
Phones (where GPS is headed) will be more location-aware, and will alter behavior accordingly.
Your phone will "know" when you're in the office, and switch to vibrate.
Your phone will "know" when you're in a store, and attempt to find coupons or advertised deals.
Your phone will "know" where the best gas prices are within a mile, and will suggest to you when your car bluetooth indicated you're down to a gallon.
I could see that GPS receiver will be embedded in most mid to high end phones. Software and map storage won't be an issue due to the lower price of the faster CPUs and vast memory space. Map could aslo be downloaded at realtime, but the data plan got to be cheaper (in Canada at least).

I think it'll be neat when phones that have GPS as well as an internet connection start to recognize when you've entered a particular venue - maybe a mall, a national/state park, an amusement park - that already has a map for patrons to use to locate themselves and various attractions. Then, when the device senses through GPS that you've entered the area, it will prompt you to download a GPS enabled map of the venue, helping you find where you are and where you want to go...
Now that GPS receivers are becoming ubiquitous in higher-end phones, the push will be to make them more sensitive and less power-hungry so they can be on all the time and keep a continual lock on the current position. That will facilitate location-based services, such as local searches, social networking, "push" micro-scale advertising (integrated with preferences from analyzing email and browsing traffic via the phone), etc.
I think it will be added to all phones in the future, I only hope it won't be locked to a "pay-per-day" app..... Chips get cheaper all the time and the phone companies are looking to get more nickles and dimes from their customers.....
