... You Can DO IT in 10 Months! This is NOT Rocket Science, it's a music player with a lot of very cool features ... and more will be coming. So now we have just 10 days to go before the release and my guess is that it is going to be BIG. Why? For a variety of reasons but I believe that Microsoft is jumping in at the right time with the right changes that are attractive to a HUGE segment of the folks who listen to "tunes" on daily basis. Recent reports have indicated that although Apple has a strong share of the market segment, 59\% of those that have an iPod will "jump ship" to get a Zune. That's HUGE! Robert Scoble said: "iPod has hundreds of accessories and has car manufacturers who make their cars “iPod compatible.” Zune won’t be able to match that out of the gate". Robert you are correct but check out what IS available and wait and see how fast it grows....it will be an incredible flurry of accessories right after the launch starts. My guess is that folks will get a Zune for the holidays and start getting all those nice new accessories right after the new year starts. Roberts biggest point in his blog entrywas:
And, the Zune has a better software updater. I’m already hearing that within a few days of release in mid-November that there will already be some new features released.
That’s something Apple should worry about. If Microsoft can upgrade all of its Zune players easily with new features and games and such, then they can build experiences that the iPod can’t easily get (and if third-party developers can play there, watch out. Remember 1989? I thought the Macintosh was superior to Windows. Which one ended up with more market share? The ones that the developers could extend the easiest.
Check out the ZUNE.NET site to see and reada little more about the ZUNE and some of the neat accessories that are already ready to roll out when folks start getting their NEW ZUNES ... all this in ONLY 10 Months. Special thanks to James at jkOnTheRun for posting that ZUNE.NET was now live!
The fact that MS took 10 months shows. From the get-go, this looks like an unfinished and uninspiring product. Sure, they took a rehashed Toshiba Gigabeat, threw a lame implementation of WiFi, and have basically told the public on the get-go it's an unfinished product.
Hmm...don't really need to review a product to know that it's a bland design, only comes with a petty 30Gb drive (especially small for a player that's touted as both a Music and Video player), that you can't share non-DRM files via wifi, and that you can't purchase music from the player itself, and won't work with a Mac, and shuns plays-for-sure architecture.
So, remind me once again why someone would want to buy this device?

I like the design...alot.

30GB isn't exactly "petty". It's rather large for some people, including myself.

Not an issue with many people, including myself.

I actually like that "feature"...or lack of.

A majority of people don't use Mac, so it's not like it's a drawback. There's always the iPod for Mac.

Because it's not an iPod :)
It has WiFi.
Large storage capacity.
It's not an iPod.
It's design.
Ability to use something other than iTunes (see proprietary).
And....it's not an iPod.
That's all I feel to add right now, until I get my hands on the Zune :)

I like a lot of what I've been reading about the Zune, but in what way is it not proprietary? It seems to me that both the Zune and the iPod support both proprietary formats (DRM, purchased items) and non-proprietary formats. Are you referring to some other aspect of the device?
