I had to pass this on ....

I can't tell you how many times I have said in reviews that I loved the product but that I hated the packaging. Plastic blister packs are a huge pain to open and often as you attempt to open the package you either damage part of the product, literature, included CDs or YOURSELF. So when I saw this story posted on Techdirt by Mike, I just had to pass it on.

This Holiday Season, All I Want Is A Package That Opens Easily

from the please-please-pretty-pretty-please dept
Along with the holiday shopping season, we've also got the growing fear of people dreading opening those annoyingly difficult plastic "blister packs" that way too many products come in these days. It's tough to find anyone who likes them... other than stores. Retailers claim that it helps cut down on theft, and keeps products fresh and new, but the frustration level of people trying to open the damn things is reaching dangerous levels. Apparently, thousands of people end up at the emergency room each year with "injuries from plastic packaging" according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. So, this holiday season, if you absolutely must buy anyone anything that comes in an impossible to open plastic clamshell, please be careful trying to open it. We'd recommend that you get one of the new device made especially for opening them, but they're apparently sold out in most places, and even if you found one... they apparently come sealed in plastic themselves.

Its just a box cutter right? I wonder about the thing in the front the part that sorta resembles a letter opener. Well I just know I want one of those things >_<

Amen, brother, I complain constantly and bitterly about those damn plasti-welded sheets of kevlar they are putting products into these days. Even having a good box cutter or pocket knife doesn't always do you any good, since many of the packages do make it nearly impossible to cut away the packaging without coming into contact with your product. I wonder how many of these people smash only to return the product to the store? Is it worth the theft-deterrence if your legitimate purchasers are unable to use your product?

Reminds me of a Christmas several years back, when my brother gave me a really good box cutter... in a blister pack... in a cardboard box sealed with fibre-tape, inside another box sealed with duck tape... inside another box....

I use those scissors that are used to cut poultry bones. At least that's what my wife says they're for once I tried it. Works great, as long as you can safely cut without cutting the merchandise.

What I wonder is why some lawsuits haven't stopped the use of this packaging. Wondered if anyone had been hurt, now I know...
