UPDATE : There may be no need to follow this, thanks to Judie Hughes via PM for pointing me to this site, where they state this this email I received is false. Hell, I didn’t know, but I sure wanted to help you guys not get spam calls if it were true.
REMINDER....12 days from today, all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls. .....YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222.
It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time.
It blocks your number for five (5) years.
You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked.

Why not just visit the Do Not Call registry website: Do Not Call ... This is for USA Numbers only, however. But still ... and you don't even need to call them from your cellphone. :-)
Yeah, I seen that Urban Legends reference before.. Was wondering the same.
I used the Do Not Call website that the FTC has before.. Did it again today to be on the safe side though. :)

I saw the Snopes thing too, but I don't think it will hurt to be added to the list.
Nice thing, when I added my cell phone I checked my home phone and it was no longer listed. Only thing I can think is that happened when I changed home service providers (even though I kept the same phone number).
The following is from the FTC.gov site regarding cell phones and telemarketers:
10. Can I register my cell phone on the National Do Not Call Registry?
Yes, you may place your personal cell phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. The registry has accepted cell phone numbers since it opened for registrations in June 2003. There is no deadline to register a home or cell phone number on the Registry.
You may have received an email telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database; however, that is not the case. FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers don’t call consumers on their cell phones without their consent.

Thanks for the update. This still does not stop human telemarketers from calling you. Well, that does not stop you from hanging up on them (but it still costs you money, or your minutes).
Anyway, urban legend or not, it is always good to have your number on the do not call list (that is, if you are receiving spam calls on your cellphone)

Some telemarketers will call mobile phone numbers and some will not. However, if you don't want to be bothered just add your mobile number as well as your home number. When the penalty for a violation is US$10,000 per violation, I don't think you will have anything to worry about if you are on the list.
We appreciate it anyway Chris.. I happen to agree completely with wanting to help us all out and prevent from getting voice spammed on our cells.. :)

Even though it is unlikely that we will get calls from telemarketers on cell phones, it still doesn't hurt to sign up on the DNC list. I realized that I had done so for my home phone, but not my cell. So, I agree, Chris' warning was a good thing! :approve:
