History DOES Repeat Itself

Hey, Apple: Remember the Newton before releasing iPhone

David Haskin put up an interesting piece on the ComputerWorld Blogs that is worth reading. History does repeat itself and if Apple is not careful, it may well happen again.

In part, David said:

... I was reminded of the Newton lately and how, despite its current hot streak, Apple doesn't have an unblemished record when it comes to introducing innovative new devices. And the company may well be making some of the same mistakes now as it made in 1993 when it introduced Newton.

Apple seems to be repeating the cycle again with iPhone, developing what is undoubtedly an advanced product with a remarkable interface and overcharging for it. A recent survey found that a minuscule number of consumers would pay $500 for a 4 GB iPhone.

Yeah... I don't know about this iPhone business. Sure, it might sell like hotcakes at first but in the long run? This thing might be another flop for them.

I am not a i-fan...I like competition in the marketplace....so if they want to get into the phone market...I say "Go for it"...

Their first phone has some bugs, needs some things...but it is a start...

Not that I want one....but it gives us something else to chose from! :)

And you don't think people were saying the same thing about the fledgling Pocket PC OS back in 2000? Or a little (white) Mp3 player? Unlike MS, it USUALLY doesn't take Apple 3 tries before it gets something "right".

Apple is a very different company under Jobs than it was under Sculley and Amelio. Not that he bats 1.000 - remember the Cube? - but he has a pretty good record.

Here is what I remember, though - plenty of people were willing to pay $500 for the first gen, 5 GB iPod. They were able to increase the storage and decrease the price in a short period of time. That will likely happen here as well. There are plenty of fanboys who are stomping at the bit to get one at the start, and there will be plenty, plenty more waiting to see fast and how far how the features grow and prices fall before they take the plunge.

Another difference is that MS would never get away with some of the stuff Jobs has pulled off. Anticompetitive behaviour such as that exhibited by the "only iPod" iTunes sales. Or "no 3rd party apps at all" on the iPhone. Hands up those who think BillG could pull that off these days!
