CompUSA - Fighting to stay alive!
DailyTechreported today thatCompUSA has announced plans to close nearly 130 Stores. Personally, I am sad that this is about to occur. The CompUSA store near me has been a wonderful source of supplies and most importantly information when I needed it. Earlier this year, Circuit City announced a handful of store closings in the United States along with 60 more in Canada. Today electronics retailer CompUSA is taking more dramatic steps. The company announced that it is closing 126 stores nationwide (DOC) leaving just 109 stores in 39 states and Puerto Rico. "Based on changing conditions in the consumer retail electronics market, the company identified the need to close and sell stores with low performance or non strategic, old store layouts and locations faced with market saturation," said CompUSA CEO Roman Ross. "The process began last week with the closing of four CompUSA stores and over the next 60-90 days." Click this linkto see if locations in your area will survive or be closed due to restructuring, you can if you want to see if your store will be amongst the missing. Click on the link above to read the rest of the story. If your location is not shown in the list of stores, it will be closed within the next 90 days.

Yep, i read the other day, it was obvious, and actually a big surprise, from the way their employees acted all this time, that they lasted this long.
It is sad to see a big chain go down like this, but that's the result of poor management.
I got my T-Mobile SDA from CompUSA last year, they normally have very good deals on phones, if you extend or sign new contract.

I've never lived near one but have always visited one when I was in an area that had one. I have ordered from them many times online. For the most part, I really liked them and am sad to see that they are having trouble.

There's one about 3 miles from my house that is getting closed down....
I wonder if they're going to be blowing out the inventory

This is sad. The KC area used to have 2. They closed one last year, now it looks like the other one's going. I'm not totally surprised. It was either packed or empty of customers. Seems more empty lately.
If they do anything like when they closed the other store, yep, they had a heck of a clearance sale. They probably need to get rid of inventory. Then again, if a lot of stores are closing, who knows? The other one had a lot of stuff that was clearly from other stores or excess inventory from somewhere. I did see some "old" PDA stuff that they hadn't sold in the stores here for awhile. (By "Old", I mean stuff like for Ipaq 3xxx/5xxx series, for example)

No wonder there was no Sunday ad this week! Looks like they're closing all MN stores.

I wasn't surprised at all by this. I have two of 'em within a five mile radius of where I live that will be getting the smackdown. One just a mile from where I work. They're rarely busy too.
It's a shame on one hand because they're great when you need parts quick. But, the flip side to that is they're also more expensive than online retailers, which is why I usually buy online.
They saved my ass Tuesday though. I needed an IDE drive quick, and they were there. I can't believe someone used a sole IDE drive for storage in a bloody file server with mission critical data on it.. Thankfully that was before my time, but still, to just find out about it.. Ugh..

Yeah, you can find better deals online, but it's nice to have something like CompUSA not too far away for emergencies. They've saved me a time or two. Fortunately, there is a Micro Center about the same distance away from me. It seems to keep a little busier, so hopefully they are here to stay.

LOL, I've got 2 BestBuys, a CircuitCity, Office Depot, Office Max and 2 other mom&pop type PC hardware type stuff stores all within an 8 mile radius..
1 down 7 more to go+ online shopping..
Comp-Who????? ;)
BTW, I went to CompUsa teserday after reading this post and they were blowing out stuff all over the place. I could've picked up a $1500 HP laptop for the bargain basement price of $1469 what a deal!!!!

I wasn't really considering Best Buy, Office Max or Office Depot. Yeah, there are several of those around close, but when it comes to hardware and software, they don't have the selection of Compusa and Micro Center. At least not the stores I've been in, here and elsewhere across the US. There are also a few mom and pop places around, and there *is* always online...
Haven't gone to the local store yet. Guess it really won't surprise me one way or the other if they do/don't have a big "blow out" sale...

Yeah, I gotta agree.. Best Buy, Office Max, etc.. They can't compete. Their hardware selections are mediocre, and they generally don't have what I'm looking for.
I do have a Micro Center not too far from me. They've got a good amount of hardware. Also a Computer Builders Warehouse (not sure how far they stretch) that has a decent selection sometimes too.
Utlimately though, best selection has always been online. Ah well.

Maybe they should have concentrated on strictly computers instead of trying to be another Best Buy or Circuit City. That is the main reason I quite shopping there.
