In search of the perfect Gadget Bag
Doing a little inquiry from folks on what they would consider the perfect gadget bag. Keep in mind, I am talking about something no bigger than the front pouch of a basic backpack. Something you could carry devices, some cords, memory, and more on a trip or like I do, carry 5-6 phones and a music player on my geek trips. Recently, I took a look at the Proporta Gadget Bag. While it was a great bag, it's not exactly what I am looking for in my perfect gadget bag. You can check out the video unboxing of the proporta bag to see it and the bag I am currently using. (which btw is pretty close to perfect)

You are on time with this question/review. This past weekend I was out escorting my wife to some social weekend and was stuck in a hotel room with awful cable channel choices.
I had my 4705, my t-mobile mda, my radar detector, my pioneer inno, a GPS reciever and apple G4 laptop when she wasn't using it which was most of the time.
I had 4 CF cards, I had car and wall chargers for the 4705,mda and the inno, and car chargers for the radar detector and the GPS. I had a home and acar antenna for the inno Next time , I will also have portable stereo speakers and a power strip capable of handling all those wall warts.
What would I want is a bag like your gps bag that had sleeves for several hand sized devices, maybe a zippered sleeve for memory cards, and then maybe another section where I could store the power cords. I dont know if it is too much to ask for the power cord area to be sectioned off to keep the cords organized as well. And perhaps the speakers, power strip and antenna would need to go in a seperate bag.
I do think the power strip is important because hotel rooms only have so many plugs and usually there is stuff in a lot of them and several of them are switch controlled
I would also want this bag, the bag for the devices, to be attachable to the shoulder strap of another bag so that my hands could be free for yet another bag.
Perhaps 2-3 bags would be best. One for stuff that you would only use in the car, or if you are sitting somewhere waiting. Say the devices and the car chargers. Then another bag with the stuff you would use in your hotel room.

How about a bag similar to the pharos bag, just a tad bigger, in leather... but small enough to fit inside the front pouch of a backpack?

I do like leather, all my other personal accessories are leather, but all my luggage is cordura , my leather case for the MDA is really starting to show it's use. Leather would look great, leather will draw attention to itself though, people will think nice case, I wonder whats in it. Cordura cases are too common and non-descript. Perhaps the ideal would be to have both and you can switch according to the situation.
One thing I forgot, that is important is a space for the face of the car stereo. so that dosent get stolen.
It can be sized to fit into a large backpack pocket.Typically I carry a large soft sided computer brief bag. That is why i wanted something that would attach to the shoulder strap.

Thats what I am trying to avoid. Looking like I am carrying a purse. The cordura bag looks more masculine, like something, you'd carry a pistol in, instead of purse. Being able to attach it to the shoulder strap also gets it out of your hands.
I am also thinking that space for a external portable hard drive would be nice.
To refine this idea a little farther,
I am thinking 2 bags. One that has the devices and the car chargers in it and space for memory cards. 6 devices should be what most gear heads would travel with at any one time. Each space should be big enough for a hand held device. Which means that at least one space should be big enough for a small umpc like a shift. It should attach to a shoulder strap, or hook on the little hooks or rings that many bags have, to supposedly attach junk, or possibly have it's on strap.
It should come in manly colors like black, navy and forest green. It should be made out of a heavy enough material and padded so that it can survive places like construction sites, the beach, camping (water resistant), the zipper pulls should be made with a large enough opening that you can pass a medium sized lock through the 2 pulls and lock it to a larger... something. It would make it theft proof but it would slow down the grab and go artist. IT should have openings to pass head phone wires out of it and maybe and outside flap so that, you can open it and see the controls of the devices inside.
I am almost ready to come up with a sketch.
Chris do you know of anyone who might manufacturer this and just give up one free for the design, with upgrades of course :)

Proporta also has RoadWired Pod Portable Storage Carry Bag
RoadWired Pod Portable Storage Carry Bag - Proporta
The RoadWired Pod provides protection and storage for all the portable electronics you could ever want to carry.
With more than 20 pockets and compartments (including a hidden 'secret pocket') the Pod Carry Bag has space for your handheld, phone, camera, portable stereo, memory, batteries cables and more - you can even pack in your pet hamster!
With reinforced Polyethyene sheets sewn into the lining, the Pod offers excellent impact protection. Combine this with its oversized dual-closure weather flap and you have serious protection from the elements too.
All this in a product which moulds itself perfectly to whatever its carrying and can be worn as a waist pack on your own belt or on a shoulder strap.
Available in black - essential travel kit.
Overall Size: 17.8cm L x 16.5cm H x 12.7cm D.
Interior Size: 8.9cm L x 16.5cm H x 10.2cm D
I have a few Vera Bradley bags (I'm a girl so it's ok :) ) verabradley.com - Vera Bradley - Handbags
Many of the bags have 6 pockets on the inside, so I am able to carry 6 devices/gadgets everyday without much issue with one of their many styles of handbags. And if I need to take more "stuff", I simply carry a larger bag or one with extra accessories (cosmetic/jewelry bag) that easily hold extra cords, cards, etc.
