T-Mobile Wing (HTC Atlas) Review

Reviewer : Chris Leckness
Vendor : T-Mobile
Price : $299.00 w/ 2 year Contract / $499.00 w/o Contact
Rating : 90/100
The Wing is based on the HTC Herald design, but that's not the code name for this HTC Device. The Wing's code name is the HTC Atlas. I am not 100\% sure what the difference in the Herald and Atlas are, but it seems that it's only the color. The T-Mobile Wing is the follow on product offering to the T-Mobile MDA (aka HTC Wizard). The MDA, just like the Cingular 8125 has been wildly popular among users that are just getting into the Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone arena. Cingular replaced their Wizard variant, the Cingular 8125 with the Cingular 8525 which is very similar to the T-Mobile Wing, but it's based on the HTC Hermes design. I carried the HTC Wizard ( T-Mobile MDA ) on/off for most of 2006 and really love the slide out keyboard concept. I wandered off into the Windows Mobile Powered smartphone direction for quite a bit before the Palm Treo 750 became my daily driver. After using the Wing for the last week or so, I am thinking it may be time for a change. I like it. The processor is just good enough, but I really like the look and feel of this one, not to mention I used to love the MDA styling and this is an improvement to it. Now that we've added Windows Mobile 6 to this form factor and we have a winner. The T-Mobile Wing, available exclusively from T-Mobile USA, offers an easy-to-use solution for personal and professional e-mail on the go. Among the first devices in the U.S. shipping with Windows Mobile 6, the T-Mobile Wing is your desktop on the go, keeping you connected with instant access to your e-mail, calendar, contacts and Microsoft Office documents from your pocket-sized phone. T-Mobile’s myFavesservice allows unlimited calling to your Fave5, so you can stay connected with friends, family and colleagues with just one touch. The compact design includes a large, vibrant and intuitive touch screen, slide-out full computer-like QWERTY keyboard, making it easy to type out a quick e-mail, text message or picture message to your friends, as well as 2MP camera, high speed Internet access, music and video playback, and a smooth soft touch exterior. The T-Mobile Wing is a powerful way to stay connected with a phone, e-mail and camera in one device without any compromises. READ ON FOR THE FULL REVIEW AND VIDEO

Surprise to hear that Chris. Like yourself, I owned a KJAM for well over a year. I tweaked the crap out of it, getting every ounce of performance I could out of it. When compared to the Treo, the KJAM just didn't cut the mustard performance-wise even oc'ed at 240mhz.

However, in the end, it was the form factor that really did it in for me. I am not a big text'er or on-the-device-emailer, but the availability of a front facing keyboard just seals the deal. I don't think I will ever be able to go back to a slider again. My main gripe with PDA-phones without front facing keyboards is dialing a phone number. Not every number I dial in in my contacts and dialing using the on-screen interface, having to touch the screen was just a PIA.

Chris - Long time lurker, first time replier. I agree with you in that I don't like sacrificing processor speed for battery life. I have the Cingular 8525. I purposely waited until this model came out and got it instead of the 8125 in large part due to the processor speed. Neither one really compares to my Mid-level X50 (524 mhz processor) as far as speed. I am willing to give some of that up for 3G and push email though.

I also like having the shortcut buttons on the top of the 8525 for email and IE. I guess they are doing away with that as well?

Some people have all the fun. JK
I have the Cingular 8125 and don't have any problems really with the processor. My only gripe with it is as someone above said is dialling phone number in the car. At least the new ones have a dial pad area of the keyboard when in phone mode. Looks like a nice unit but not enough improvement IMO over the MDA (wizard) for t-mobile customers to change.

Processor: 200MHz TI OMAP 850... why? Sometimes you wanna take a call during a game, etc. and if you have a few things running in the background that hogs memory, the phone will have hard time multitasking at 200Mhz.
I just don't get it. Only if Dell made X51 phones, 600000hertz of digital power, and truely brilliant screen with VGA. It feels like this is MDA revisited and only software update.. :(

Great review Chris. Thank You.

I had a Wizard, then the MDA for quite a few months, dare I say a year? I have also used the 6700 on Verizon, alhtough it wasn't mine so not as much.

For me, one of the things I want it to do it last a few hours with use. SO I am willing to sacrifice for the battery life. Overclockign the MDA did make a difference, though, and I have run my MDA like that since the beginning.

But with all this talk about it, I couldn't resist the new phone bug any longer. Just picked up my Wing at lunch. :)

And I didn't go into thinking this was a big, giant leap forward from the MDA. I just like getting new phones and it had been a while. WM6 pushed me over the edge (and new OS's frequently do that to me, good and bad!).

I do wish they would push the processor just a tad! Come on! And it was hard to pass up the X700, with the built-in gps...

Oh to be Chris and get one of everything!

JNGold, Yes... It has taken a couple days to get used to the slider again. The biggest adjustment was in the dialing. Palm Treos just have it all in that category. Hitting the phone button brings up the last few callers and I REALLY miss that.

200mhz, It's not horrible, but you are right hyedipin, not going to do much multitasking here.

Bottom line... If the would have gone with a 400mhz Intel chip, this phone would be much better. As it stands now, I might buy one, unlock it and use it with Cingular/ATT..
