Makers of KazAA Lauch PocketPC App For FREE Worldwide Phone Calls

The name of the app is Skype. It has been around for PC users since August of last year. Like KazAA, it is a P2P app but, instead of swapping files, you can talk worldwide for free...at least for now (includes conference calling capabilities).

My only question is, since it's KazAA related, how much a threat is spyware? They advertise on their website www.skype.com
that there is no spyware nor adware. However, when you read the EULA, they give themselves and third parties permision to access/use your computer and resources. But they swear to protect your privacy...RIIIIGHT ;)

Nonetheless, Skype is poised to be a heavy hitter. Some are even calling it a "killer app". They are backed by Draper Fisher Jurvetson and others and it seems that everybody is talking about them including Forbes http://www.forbes.com/technology/200...0406skype.html

Whadaya think?

Can you dial regular phone numbers? Or you can communicate only with other users of this app?

u should be able to communicate with useres of other similar voip programs. they are all just sip phones. some other examples are microsoft portrait, and x-ten. im sure there are others but they can all communicate with each other since they all work off the same concept, u just need to know the ip numba. cant call regular landline numbers though

Yeah, I'd recommend using Portrait for now, at least until Skype's actual nature becomes more clear. I've found Portrait quite tolerable, though there's the odd technical glitch, and of course the other party has to know you're going to call, and be waiting.... Email-scheduled conversations aren't that hard to set up though. Sure saves a pile on long distance.

BTW, is there any application that would allow you to call regular phone numbers from your pc at *low* cost (or even free)?

no, they are on two different networks...u might be able to buy a 3g card but it would cost at least like $200, come from some obscure japanese company, and might not be legal

Based on this post, I had to give this a shot. I can say this about your spyware concern. I installed the Desktop version and then ran a spyware scan with SpySweeper 2.6 with the latest signature updates. It found absolutely no spyware on my machine. Looks like they are living up to their claim!!!:D

I've been using Skype for some time now. Great service. They just spent somthing like $1.5 million to try to get it to work with all landline phones.
