Top 10 PDAs - Not a Dell Among Them

Pocket PC World has posted their 10 top PDAs on the market. If you are looking to see where the X30 or X5 is, don't bother. They didn't make the list. Dell has really fallen off the radar with their current lineup. Sure the X30 is a great deal, but it seems to always fall behind the iPAQ 4150 and other Pocket PCs.

PC World - Top 10 PDAs

It just might be time for Dell to reevaluate their commitment to producing a great PDA. I'm not saying the this list is at all the final word, but not even making the top 10 says something to the state of Dell Pocket PCs.

Thanks to Jason Dunn for posting this over at PPCT.

EDIT : "Dell's Axim X30--the successor to the Axim 3i, our last Best Buy--hadn't been released at press time. Look for a review of it in next month's New Products."

Granted the X3i is not on the top 10 list, but this is quoted from
their site regarding X30:
Quote:
Dell's Axim X30--the successor to the Axim 3i, our last Best Buy--hadn't been released at press time. Look for a review of it in next month's New Products.

New Windows Mobile models dominate our Top 10 PDAs chart this month. A few--including units from HP and Asus--have both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity: By adding a Bluetooth cell phone, you can send and receive e-mail or surf the Web from almost anywhere. A couple of interesting units don't appear: Mitac's Mio 168 GPS, a Windows Mobile PDA with a built-in GPS receiver, was expensive and hard to use, so it missed our chart; Dell's Axim X30--the successor to the Axim 3i, our last Best Buy--hadn't been released at press time. Look for a review of it in next month's New Products.

Meh, doesn't change anything. Didn't read further because I don't really care.

The lack of good PDAs from Dell is apparent. Even if the X30 makes the list, its only one PDA and by that time HP could have 3-4 on the list. Its not easy for me to say, but Dell might never regain its glory days when the X5 put the market on edge. HP has reacted in such a way the Dell's answer to the 4150 is too late to matter and the new HP iPAQ rx3000 seems to show that they are late again.

If any of the prices rumored for the new HPs are right, then
HP Doesnt really concern me either, i could never pay
500+ for a PDA.

I do have to agree though, the new HP's look sweet :-(

but I just cant afford them.

But at least HP gives you a choice. They do have low end and high end PDAs. Dell just has a low end and a lower end. *MAYBE* they will have a new PDA out by October that would seem to have VGA, but what does that do? The holes in their lineup are huge.

We've all been sitting here waiting for something to happen and all that we've seen is the x30 which really is an update, not a new PDA. New PDAs have cameras, phones and other features built into them. With Dell you can't get that.

Well either way, Im still glad Dell is producing PDA's

I am sure even HP's lower end (same features as X30 high)
will be way out of my budget.

Unless they grow, they won't continue to produce PDAs. Eventually their marketshare will decrease enough to force them to either commit to the platform or drop it totally.

Maybe but HP is putting out atleast 10 new PDAs before the end of the year. These PDAs will range from ~$300 to ~$600. This will include a iPAQ smartphone that will support all wireless technologies and a VGA-enabled PDA as well.

HP's prices are more than Dell's granted. But when I look at prices I look at the ruggedness of the device and the support that comes with it. Also when it comes to this particular list price is not even looked at. It is the quality of the device. Price wise will make a difference on a Best Buy list but not necessarily the top 10 PDAs.

It will be real interesting to see how Dell will react to the massive line-up that HP is about to launch.

Another point is this year is the first that I can remember where one company (either PPC or Palm) has announced a lineup as large as what HP is getting ready to launch. This sends a strong statement that they plan to increase their marketshare. And contrary to popular belief HP has the customer support muscle to do it because of their experience in the Pocket PC market place.

I dont need some review by a company that has frequently been accused of getting payoffs for rating a particular product as "best" to tell me what the best value is.

Give me the specs, give me the price, and give me user feedback to determine reliablility, and I'll decide for myself what should be at the top of the list based on what I want it for. Dell or otherwise.

OK how about facts? HP will release at least 8 new PDAs this year. If Dell is lucky, maybe 2. The quality of iPAQs are top notch, but you pay a premium for it. Dell has undercut the prices, but the lack of models isn't going to increase sales. After more than 18 months as a member here, I've noticed a trend. Many Axim owners are first time PPC owners. In time they usually upgrade and move on. Look at most of the "power posters". They all have iPAQs, Toshibas, Asus, or even high end Palms now. Sure they stick around because Aximsite is a great resource, but where is the future of this site if Dell continues on its path?

Of course they never put Dell on their list. Most of the computer magazines are paid by computer manufacturers to give a good write up about their product. Even car magazines to car manufacturers... same thing. Dell does not even have to. Michael Dell is like number 18 in the richest man in the world, 11th in the U.S.. Yeah, more people buy HP iPAQs... CAUSE THEY"RE EVERYWHERE!!! You can buy one in any store nowadays, even at K Mart. Come on now, Pocket PC magazine only wrote a review about the X5 after 2 months when the HP iPAQ 5400 came out and made a comparison. Now that the X30 came out, of course they wouldn't include it on this months issue with the rest of the other PDAs, that would blow everyone away... and with the price Dell's giving... and don't forget the discount coupons. Anyway, i'll leave it up to you guys!

Cheers!
