Those graphics benchmarks look horrible for the X50v. I understand that they're not taking the Intel video processor into account, but if the benchmarks can't access it, what makes us think other programs will? I was also hoping that the 1100mah battery was smaller in comparison to the Hx4705 because the X50 would be able to utilize less power, but it looks like that is not the case. What good will a pda be if I can only use it for 2.5 hours?!
Chris,
I do think it does help that the X50 processor can be throttled and adjusted for different requirements while the 4700 is set to 624MHz all the time, correct? I wonder how this impacted battery life testing and what processor speed Spb Benchmark used for testing battery life.
Do you know if the wireless and microphone buttons on the side can be programmed to be up/down directional buttons (substitute for a jog dial)?
The hardware buttons can be mapped to scroll up, down, left, or right. I just tested it and it works like a charm. I prefer to map my record button to screen orientation though.

I must ask... what the heck happened to the screen on that 4155? :D
Nice review as usual, Chris. Keep up the good work.

Wow, what a wonderfully in-depth review. It's easily the best on the X50 I've read (well, that'd be three so far).
I already own an iPaq hx4700, but I was interested in the X50v because of its previously rumored weight and size. I figured 4.9 ounces was too good to be true, and my enthusiasm for the X50 diminished slightly last night when I found out it weighs 6.2 ounces. Still, that's not actually too bad and the X50v is still a kick-ass device. I really like its size, curved edges, and tapered bottom (it ought to fit more comfortably in a pants pocket).
But its unknown screen quality and battery life concerned me, and Chris addressed those topics as if he read my mind. Battery life is poor, so I'd need to carry a spare or use the extended battery (making this device almost an inch thick!) And screen quality sounds a bit disappointing, though maybe it's not inferior enough to the hx4700 to be a real concern.
However, given that the X50v w/ spare battery costs as much as my hx4700 ($579 for those of us who qualify for HP's educational discount), I'm gonna stick with the HP. For now.
Anyway, thanks for the review and for running this site; I found a lot of useful information here.
Terrible review on CNET. I think they are biased to HP. It seems the Axim never does well in "independant" reviews but kicks ass from their "actual" users. I'm sold for one...
