Is there a PB setting to correct this?
A second problem is that the icons selectable for the Categories Manager are so small that I can only choose them using a magnifying glass.

PB is a Today screen plug-in, not a full fledged PIM, it give you the ability to display the data contained in the PIM databases; the New button open the default PIM, whether that is PI, Agenda Fusion, or Pocket Outlook. even when you click on the day title in PB and select new task/appointment, it opens the data input screen for the default PIM.

Actually there is a setting to make it open any PIM you want, you just put the path in the settings page, and check to box to use a custom PIM.

Correct, but while customizing PB to use a different PIM, the New button will still only open the default, in my case, I've elected to use PI as my default, so the New button will open PI.

OK. I load the beta and things look great, until I tried looking at all the functions. Now I have a pretty blue today screen that is almost empty of information. It shows the date just fine and the owner info is a series of squares a other miscellaneous charactors.
I have had my x50 for about a month and just started to load software in today. So, I may not fully know what I am doing here. I was really pleased with the way everything worked for about 10 minutes until this happened.
Any thoughts??

I have been having the same problem. I've found that if you go into the settings and tap anything then go out of settings it will be ok until the next soft reset.

When you installed PI, did you have it assigned to the hardware buttons?
What program opens when you hit the calendar or contact button?
Have you verified that PI is the default? In PI 2005 beta, that setting is in Settings-Make Default PIM, s/b a check mark; in PI 5.x it's in Settings-Support.
You can also assign the buttons to PI through the PDA's Start-Settings-Buttons screen, PI has it's own selections, in PI 2005, you'll also have options to assign the Calendar button to open in Day, Month, Search, Timeline, Tasks or week view:)

Jerry,
That didn't work for me but the soft reset did. It still acts a bit quirky but nothing serious.

Many thanks Gdio53 for your interest and your help. You clearly have an in depth knowledge of Pocket Informant.
My PI Version is 5.6.1.0178. The "Make Default PIM" option is checked.
The Calendar and Contacts buttons open PICalendar and PIContacts exactly as they should. The mail and home butons open PITasks and PIAlarmNotes.
Everything is set up correctly and is working perfectly except the New button menu which opens correctly but PIAlarm Note, PI Apointment, PI Contact and PI Task do nothing.

I would love to try the new beta, however I had tried a trial of 4.2 and now the beta is telling me that my trial has expired. DOes anyone know of the file(s)? I need to delete in order to try out the beta?

I believe that the trial information is stored somewhere in the registry, not in any files.
You may want to post this question at www.sbsh.net, Amit is very responsive to customer needs.

I think that you have to buy and register Version 4.2 before you can insall and run the beta (assuming that your trial of 4.2 has expired). This is really not unreasonable.
