Odyssey Client 4.0
Everyone's favorite built in wifi program has just released an update. Funk Software announced an upgrade to Odyssey Client 4.0.
Odyssey Client [now] supports Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2), the encryption protocol based on the 802.11i standard (ratified by the IEEE in June 2004) and the encryption algorithm AES. The strong encryption it provides fully protects data against attack as it is transmitted over the wireless link.
Of course, some of us look to this client as more a "space-cleaning" tool. But I know there are some of you that actually use it! I tried - honestly - but the 2 MB of space was more valuable. Sorry, Funk :(

Hi forky,
The link you have in this article is for the desktop version, and is mainly enterprise software.

I thought about this, but in the initial sentence it says "The newest version of Odyssey Client, Funk Software's powerful 802.1X access client, is now available for Windows XP, 2000, 98, Me, and Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC." So, wouldn't this version count?

The press release is confusing to say the least. In the title it says it is for the desktop platform, and then in the first sentence....well you read it. Here it is
" Odyssey Client v4.0 for Desktop Platforms -- Which Adds Support for WPA2 -- Is Now Available
The newest version of Odyssey Client, Funk Software's powerful 802.1X access client, is now available for Windows XP, 2000, 98, Me, and Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC."

Hi Forky! You're right, but sometimes you'll find it is better to provide the exact URL to things

(note price to buy is still $50, did not see upgrade price)

this is probably a dumb question, but does this mean i can upgrade this on my axim x50v for free? or will i have to purchase it, or will it be something that dell will "take care of" with a rom upgrade or something.
and maybe another stupid question is, since the client is in a non-writable area of the rom, can one truely upgrade this? won't it disappear after a reset?

i am a newbie myself, but i was told that this was the only way i would be able to connect to WPA's and networks with hidden ssid's. so far that has been true since my workplace uses a hidden ssid.
i wonder though if this would work for networks on channel 11 though since 802.11b only goes up to channel 6 i believe. *shrug*

Lost in Space
Well, I am always intrigued when a software upgrade comes out as I always would like to be running the latest program.
Can we consolidate all the posts into one overview about the new Odyssey 4.0? There shure was a lot of techno slang going there, we newbees need more detail to follow
One more thing, I can surf just fine right now but I can't tell if I am doing it theu Dell Wan; Network cards; Odssey client
I know I should wll enough alone. However, how do you know what system you use to connect and then should I update it if something like the Odyssey 4.0 shows up?
Thanks.

i'm not sure if this helps or is totally wrong, but when it is using the odyssey, the program shows
. check mark in "Connect to"
. "Status: Connected"
. "Network SSID: "
doesn't this mean that is is using the client to connect to the AP?
as for which wireless you are using, on my x50v there is an indicator on the top that looks like the antenna to show that the Dell WiFi is on (also the steplike bars in the lower right corner are connected instead of broken horizontally).
i do not own another means of wifi (sd or cf based) so i do not know of those products, but there should be a program that runs like a wireless utility that might show it (is my guess).

I have an X50V and I currently use WPA-PSK to connect it to my AP, I have not used the Odyssey Client in the past and would rather not in the future. My question is this, with the new Odyssey Client 4.0 I am able to use WPA2 between my axim and AP, correct? If this is the case then the axim would obviously be upgradable to WPA2 I would assume and if this is correct does that mean that Dell could or would issue an upgrade for the axim that would allow the use of WPA2 without the Odyssey Client being used.
Thank you
