Archos AV700 - Yowza!

Time for some gadget-oodling goodness. Infosync has some nice pictures on the Archos AV700 model. It sports a 7" screen and come in 40 GB and 100 GB models. Aww man.. that's a lot of video coverage. It also can output movie files AND allow you to transfer files to it (e.g. from a digital camera). Sheesh - what can't this do? Run Windows Mobile :( ...

But, before you think about trashing your iPod, you might want to check the price. According to the article, "the AV700 40 GB edition will sell for 400 GBP, or $750 USD, while the 100 GB edition will sell for 600 GBP, or $1150 USD". I'll stick to my less-expensive X50v, but I'll still continue to drool! Looks like this one is only available in Europe, too (for now!)

I have one of the first archos av120. It has a very small screen but it can output to a tv. It can record video and audio from any source but it has one major flaw. The battery died in about 2 months. This is a common problem for the archos players and the battery isnt swapable by the user. I hope they worked out their battery failure issue otherwise stay near an electrical outlet or you will be out of juice before you know it.

Wow, that's sweet, but it's not a PPC. When they make a PPC like that with 40+GB HDD, 7"+ widescreen and running the latest Windows Mobile OS or even a full version of the Windows desktop OS, then I'd buy it... but it is noice to sit back, drool and dream. :)

I agree with FallN :approve:

here's a link to the Archos website - http://www.archos.com/

Note the highly-rated AV420 is available for around $400 street price, and may be a good investment if you don't already have a TV tuner/capture card.

Yeah I agree this looks nice. I would love to mount this in my car (with a charger) so I could have portable TV/Video in the car and out.

I agree with AXILLA.

I had one of their very first MP3 players, with only 6Gb space (quite a brick for that size).
Had it for a month and then literally BURNT on me while charging (I saw smoke coming out).
Long story short, I wasn't able to get it repaired or exchanged.

I'm never buying anything Archos again.

I had an Archos 6000.. which was one of the first harddrive based mp3 players (before the ipod).

It was very good to me, and just recently (5 yeas later) I sold it because I don't need that much space :-p

Actually, they have. But it is running Linux, has a 30GB drive and still performs all the Tivo-like functions that the AV400 series does. Also - it has wifi built in, and a USB host system able to talk to cameras and the like!

It does look like a nice device. Hoping they work some of the bugs out in the next version, or even better, incorporate the PDA features into the AV700 above.
