About GPS Tuner
GPS Tuner is a high precision measurement, mapping and geocaching tool for Pocket PC. You are able to record high precision waypoints (even sub-meter) thanks to the averaging technique. GPS Tuner provides flexible management of waypoints, geocaching files, tracks and routes. GIF, JPG, PNG or BMP files can be used as maps, you need only two positions for calibrating. With Digital Compass you can easily navigate to a waypoint or walk along a route.
Excellent tool for hiking, geocaching, boating, flying, driving and many other sporting activities where monitoring of the length, distance and speed would be important.
In the Geo version of GPS Tuner you are able to calculate area and perimeter (and export the shape in DXF format).

I'm also a GPS virgin, but have had a look at the gpstuner.com website about the product - as i understand it you can scan maps and then use them on your PDA along with GPS Tuner to plot your route for example - have a look at the following link http://www.gpstuner.com/easysteps/creating_maps.htm
as well as the rest of the 'Easy Steps' pages - index at http://www.gpstuner.com/easysteps/index.htm
Seems a very clear and well laid out site, and certainly is a product that I would like to try, especially the GPS Tuner Geo - might save me a bit of random tape measuring on some plots of land! Now all I need is the GPS unit!

(Part of the reason I ask is that where my parents live, in rural Ireland, there is NO GPS software that covers their area, map-wise!)
I am using GPS tuner for a while- it's great a tool for tracking walks or geocaching and in my view it is among the best in the market. I used it on the plane and it was amazing to see how our flight progressed- I had a map of Europe loaded- even the flight attendants were quite amused. Definitely worth your money.
It is written by Hungarian programmer and I think he has done a good job.
BTW: I am not affiliated in any way with his company- just found the GPS tuner usefull tool for tracking my workouts and pleasure trips.
Any of you GPS Tuner users have any luck using the TerraServer map download feature? Whenever I try it I get photos for an area that is most certainly not where I'm located (even though the lat/long coordinates from the program are correct).
thanks for your replies (apologies for the delay replying!). It would sound then that since the software is fairly inexpensive, as long as the basic map that comes with your PDA is ok, then this is a cheap way of getting improved map coverage.
For example, I'm thinking of buying a Globalsat BT-338 GPS unit and at buygpsnow.com, you have the choice of either iGuidance or Navigator 3. So would I be right in saying then that whichever software I buy, I can expand my map range with something like GPSTuner? I keep thinking there's a catch/limitation here somewhere...
