Tutorial : Flash Memory and Formatting

Flash Memory and Formatting

Aximsite user, Adrian Knack, has written a nice little tutorial for us. Everyone thank him and check it out.

"So you have just bought your first flash memory card. Whether it is a SD (Secure Digital) or CF (Compact Flash) card you might be wondering if you should format it, or just pop it into your PDA and start playing. Hopefully this will answer some of your questions. " - Adrian Knack

I am considering purchasing Resco File Explorer. This has a function to format SD and CF cards but when I looked in detail it doesnt seem to have the ability to select FAT16 or FAT32.

My question is, for my 1GB SD card, will Resco File Explorer format it as FAT16 or FAT32. FAT32 seems to be recommended for 1GB cards.

I agree with CRXGSR that the equation is missing. Other than that, the tutorial was great. Very informative. I always wondered how I should have formatted my cards. Thanks!

The author did NOT mention HOW to go about using the softwares in the article to format the memory cards. Many of us novice users (myself included) would like to know exaxtly how to do it. Also, if someone has been using the card "as is" and never formated it, will formatting the card erase any data already stored on it?? Thanks!

Thank you for the tip, I checked my new Apacer 1gb card that arrived yesturday and it was already formatted in Fat file system.
But not Fat 32..

Formatting is very easy in windows XP -

I have a card reader in my printer so this took all of 2 min..

Thanks again from a new Axim X30 user..

To format in XP

Control Panel/ admin tools / computer management / disk management

It should bring up all available storage drives
(hard and removable).

It will also tell what format the card is in.

Right click on your SD (CF or any other card or hardrive)
Choose format and look for the drop down box and Choose Fat or Fat 32 for cards over 512mb :approve:

Formatting will erase all information stored

Most already know this but for new folks I hope this helps..

Hi Adrian.

One little ADD you should have done is the difference between card-speeds, which is really important.
MMC are usually VERY slow, while SD are a lot faster.
There are even more types of SD-Cards, basically categorized into:
- NORMAL: between 3-7 MB/sec read and about 1 MB/sec write rate
- SPEED : between 6-10 MB/sec read and about 5-10 MB/sec write rate
- ULTRA : up to 20 MB/sec read/write speed.

They are sometimes called differently by the brands of cards but basically there are theses 3 categories of speeds.
I myself use the Speed pretty much. The Ultra sometimes need a SD1.1 standard cardreader which I doubt the Axims have.

Also one thing:
FAT32 sometimes has the disadvantage, that the card might not be readable everywhere anymore. I myself share the card with my digital camera from time to time. The cameras only accept FAT16 usually. So it can be a drawback to change to FAT32.

Kind Regards
Fly

Hi guys,

Good comments, thanks. I will update the tutorial to include them :)

Chris might fix the equation for us when he pops round next time.

Cheers
