A03 will be replaced...it is a completely different ROM. I think bugs will still crop up, but you should expect that it will be mostly two steps forward, and maybe one step back. The OS is included in the ROM, so when you change the OS, you'll definitely be changing the ROM.
"Persistent RAM" I think refers to the Built-in Storage.
Dougpaw - it's already there... The 128MB ROM store that currently stores the OS and acts as the BIS storage IS the persistent ROM...
Over at PPC Thougths, Jason Dunn mentioned that he has something like 9MB used and 55 MB free in "Program" RAM on his x50V (which presumably means he is running a beta of the new version on his device).
I mean I got jacked on the 2200 with windows 2k3se so I bought an axim X50v instead on one of the new units from HP, and HP better put out for the new units or else there would probably be a posse knocking on their door.
Dell also 'jacked' their existing users on WM2003SE
I know it feels great to say "I was right' and tap yourself on the back - but the reality is HP and Dell have treated their users EXACTLY the same
Like I've posted elsewhere, I don't think WM5 makes sense for the X30. You have 64 MB of ROM...only 20 MB left for programs and data. Now that everything will be stored in ROM, you are going to have the issue of not having enough memory to store all your things. I think this is the main reason Dell won't offer an upgrade, and why Microsoft said that new hardware will be required even if current devices could technically run WM5.

But you've got to think... a majority of users will have a storage card that they install on. I RARELY install anything on my ROM or RAM as it is. Occasionally I will store a very very very frequently used application on ROM just for faster load times, but with the speed of storage cards now it honestly isn't that much of a difference in terms of usability.
For development purposes though, I think the way RAM is going to be handled now will really be a burden at first to get apps/games ported over to WM5. In the long run though, it will be a better OS because of it. It really needed to be changed sometime anyhow, so it's better to just go ahead and do it than to wait it out even longer, especially as more and more users are buying into the PocketPC market.

Hey guys, heres an idea. How about we x50 owners who want to upgrade will order it together and ask Dell for a group discount? I'm sure in the business world, people often get a better deal when they order in bulk. Also, I'm sure Dell get a lot of feedback from us aximsite members. Maybe they will give us a special treat if we order the upgrade as a group? What do you guys think?

That's a great news, I am happy about it. At one point, I was actaually thinking about returning my X50v to wait for a WM 2005 device. Guess I will be keeping my Axim now.

My guess is that they aren't counting on people getting storage cards. Imagine all the EXTRA griping by people, saying "God! Microsoft/Dell gives us an upgrade, but we have to get a storage card for it to work! Stupid!" Also, the other thing is that a storage card is not as "persistent" as BIS. I've had my SD card file table wiped out, for no reason that I could discern. The card still showed that it was full, but I couldn't see the files on it. I can hear more users going, "Microsoft said this is persistent storage, but my storage card was still wiped out!"
It just looks to me that they're going for the 99.99999% case of reliable BIS.
