Thanks Chris,

Slightly disturbing about the backward compatibility issue though. 1 out of 3... Possibly that was just the emulator though.

I'll be interested to see the speed and usability of the system when it is released on the X50v. I wonder if they will offer a demo :)

Cheers
Adrian

Wow, I am glad that after years of complaints, they have finally included the two most requested programs... Powerpoint and Access.. Oh wait... Nevermind.

This isn't enough for me to give up my X5. Textmaker is great for word processing, SpreadCE and Planmaker are great for spreadsheets. Where is the real benefit from the new WM05

great job chris!!!

however, i have to say honestly that i'm a bit disappointed in the the look and feel of WM05, i was expecting a "massive" overhaul of the user interface however it pretty much looks much the same with the addition of a few new applications, i.e. powerpoint, which if pocket word/excel is any indication, will suck and you will just need to buy third party software to really take advantage of it.

more or less, it doesn't seem like a major upgrade, but a minor one

but of course, i will upgrade just to stay current but, still disappointed nevertheless...

I had also kind of hoped for a Win3.11 -> Win95 or Win2k -> WinXP Pro style update...

But I think the most important thing will be performance and battery life. A 30% improvement in battery life is massive if true!!

I found very interesting how people thinks about the beneficts of an OS in terms of GUI and Applications.

People, the real functios for an OS is to Operate the System, and I mean by that, a better managment of memory, a faster framework for installing and running applications, a better power management and a better integration with the IO interfaces.

If someone is thinking to dish over 30$ just for graphicall improvement, then should think twice!

My 0.02$

I see two reasons not to offer a fancy interface:

1- While the happy owners of a PDA with a graphic chip would love to get a better, nicer interface, I don't think the smartphone owners would be too happy about that. The interface with all the bells and whistles would use more processing power, thus slowing the device down.

2- There is the memory issue. Fancy takes more memory space.

What about doing like Win XP, and offer both interfaces? Memory issue again.

I believe MS's choice in this case is the correct one. Those who want to spice-up their interface can get a third-party application to do it. The spartan-minded users that want to save space at all costs just use the basic interface provided.

I just wonder what is the extend of customization allowed to Dell? the solution could be that Dell offers a customized interface to the X50v owners... I dont believe MS could be THAT generous, but one can dream...

the file explorer hasnt seemed to have changed much!

Seeing as it looks very multimedia focused, I can imagine the new line of pocket pc's will be fully hardware equipped

It would be nice if they could give us Pocket Office as a seperate upgrade :approve:

Thanks for the links.

To me, this doesn't look like a major upgrade... makes me wonder what are opportunity costs of the upgrade.

and...Chris, Looks like you're using powerpoint slides from Mankiw's textbook on Economics.

Great stuff, chris.

I followed the instructions at MS,
Quote:
Documentation, updates, additional images, bug submissions information, and a newsgroup for the Device Emulator are available on the Microsoft Device Emulator Community Preview website:

* Visit http://beta.microsoft.com,
* Login using your Passport account, or create one if you don't have one.
* Use Guest ID MSDEVICE to access the Community Preview website
but i am getting:

Quote:

If you have received an email welcoming you to a program and you do not see the program listed below, please wait 24 hours and try again.

Sorry, you are not enrolled in any programs that are utilizing Microsoft Beta.

But anyway, from what I can see on the images, It is a big improvement over the previous versions, and hopefully will take advantage of all the available hardware without any communication problems or major bugs.

Now, all we have to do is to wait for Axim line to be expanded later this year.

Does this mean a new Axim will be forthcoming soon? Notice this comment in yesterday's "WinInfo Daily UPDATE":

"Devices based on Windows Mobile 5.0 are already appearing from mobile carriers in Europe. In the United States, companies such as Dell and HP will ship Windows Mobile 5.0-based devices in third quarter 2005. Also, some companies will offer software updates to Windows Mobile 5.0. Dell, for example, will ship (for a small fee) a Windows Mobile 5.0 software upgrade for its Dell Axim X50 family of handheld devices in third quarter 2005."

Microsofts color programme

Looks like microsoft is sticking with it's 'traditional' color scheme programme. This is what i mean:

Windows 98 : Plain Grey / PocketPC 2002 : Plain Grey
Windows 2000/ME : Lighter Grey / PocketPC 2003 : Lighter Grey
Windows XP LUNA Theme : Blue / PocketPC 2005 : Blue (kinda)

It's just something that i noticed comparing the new screenshots to my own ax.
