I got it! Works on my Axim X50(mid). My work had the download site blocked, but our wireless network isn't filtered, so I just downloaded the file, transferred it to the SD card, popped the SD card out, transferred it to my PC, unzipped it, transferred it back to the SD card, snapped that back into my PPC (after soft reset and clearing out the files that PIE has been accumulating), and it started right up. Cany anybody say .CAB file?
Issues:
  1. Scroll buttons are tap-scroll, not drag, so you have to tap repeatedly to scroll through a web page.
  2. Crashes. Screen rotate works, but it stops the program. It seems a little touchy, and unloads itself with any excuse. Still, I like that as opposed to the persistent PPC apps that eat up your memory long after you are finished with them. I would like MiniMo to survive screen rotate, however.
  3. Where are the settings/tools? How do you navigate backwards? I got a menu to come up briefly, but there seems to be no obvious way to achieve certain things.
All in all, definitely not ready for prime-time, but I will use it and abuse it to expose all its weaknesses/flaws, hopefully finding something really useful for the crew to use to debug.

I am aware that it is an issue with this release. I am not the core developer, I simply help answer questions and do small projects. As far as I knew it was tested. Right now I don’t have a pda to test it myself. Sorry to everyone who’s had bad luck with this release!

2. Please create one big resource from .xul, .gif and .js files, because trying to copy Minimo over through the PDA's craddle takes *forever* (at least 15 minutes on my PC).
3. How do I enter a new URL? I have no toolbar on minimo.
4. Scrolling is exceptionally slow on my X5 400 Mhz.
5. Except the "cnn news" link, no other link worked for me from the initial homepage of minimo so I couldn't test anything apart cnn.
Eugenia – I’ll consider and pass on all your points. I am working on developing an installer so people don’t have to copy the files over individually. To enter a URL double tap anywhere on the screen. This will bring up the URL window. I know it’s not intuitive, we are considering other ways to approach this. Scrolling also has its issues. As for links off the home page, in prior release they have worked fine for me, I’ll have to look into it in this release.

This is the first I heard of this error, I will have to file a bug.

Red Dog, Chris posted that on my behalf. I wrote it. I tried to stress Minimo is young. Perhaps next time I need to be clearer. Lesson learned on my part.

CAB file is on its way! I’m looking for some help on that if someone knows a bit about it and can tell me why I keep getting a error. Scroll issue’s are known, Minimo is young . Much of the crashes have been improved but it still needs work. If you can Private message me sites or situations that cause minimo to crash I can file bugs. Screen rotation is a work in progress. Prior releases minimo never took advantage of the space. If you double tap you can get to the address bar. No settings to change as of yet.

Exactly why I had this made into news on the front page! Thank you PocketBrain! :)

To anyone interested in submiting bugs, my AIM screen name is attached to my aximsite name. If you wanted, you could send me a message about your bug. Please submit as much detail as possible about it, and if the bug is reproducable (ie it happens everytime). If I'm not there I'll get back to you about it.

I downloaded this late yesterday night, transfered to the Bultin memory space (took 20 minutes) then get the "Cannot find 'winEmbed'" problem too.

I'm ready to try it and fill a bug/feature list. just need to make it work

OK, I'm told that an updated version of .005 was posted this morning. A file was mistakenly not included in the zip. For everyone who was having trouble getting Minimo 005 to start please re-download it and try again.

Thanks, and sorry

What is up with that?

The link in my signature takes you to the download location of several versions of minimo. You would want to select .005. Here's a direct link:

http://www.meer.net/~dougt/minimo_ce/MinimoCE_0.005.zip

The other isse was that a semi messed up build had been posted by the core developer of minimo. It was a mistake. The updated zip file is now up. Anyone who had issues of minimo not starting should try .005 again.

Download, unzip on your desktop/laptop. Then drag the folder to your PPC. Dont do the unzipping on the pocket pc, its slow and takes lots of space

Okay I just downloaded it and used it for a bit. I'm really excited about this project and using the browser got me even more excited. I had no problem getting it to run, although even after the initial startup it's rather slow.

First off, I love the layout. My biggest complaint about PIE is all the real estate it takes up. Brilliant idea about having the navigation options be a seperate screen that you access when needed. My suggestion to make a bit more intuitive is have it accessable via a hold-tap.

The scrolling issue and the screen rotation issue stuck out to me right away. I found that I can load the program in landscape fine if I've rotated before starting it. But the navigation screen isn't formatted for it. So the 'utilities' box and the 'hide' button are off the screen. This means that the only way to make the screen go away is to hit 'back,' 'forward,' 'reload,' or 'go.'

I use Spb's full screen keyboard often, tapping on the little icon to bring it up locks minimo for some time. Evenutally, after about a minute or so, the keyboard will pop up. Everything works with it, just at an unusable pace.

Anyway, keep up the good work guys, I look forward to using this browser exclusively when it shapes up a bit more.

I have a few bugs/issues/suggestions.
1. Pages do not pick up Minimo as being a mobile browser. So sites like Axisite loading the full sized page content instead of the mobile formatted content.
2. Several times while typing on the keyboard the program has crashed. It happend both when typing into a text field on a page and while typing an addres into the address bar.
3. Several times Minimo has crashed while my PDA has been idle. For example while I typed this post on my computer I had Minimo open and a page loaded. But I just noticed that Minimo crashed.

I look forward to seeing this peice of software own PIE as Firefox owns Explorer

Thanks, screen rotation is being worked on. It's actually a bit improved from the last release, but far from complete.

Thanks the 'tap-and-hold' idea was proposed awhile back. We are considering different ways to approach this.
Minimo's useragent might still be set on the same as firefox. When a finalized useragent is picked websites will have to choose to support us and add the useragent as a UA that should load mobile sites. Keyboard issue's and crash's still seem to be common. Its being worked on.

This is because Minimo's user agent is this one:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows CE; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050517 Minimo/0.5

Without adding the word "avantgo" somewhere on the user agent, 99% of the *mobile* sites out there won't recognize the browser, as it's a new one.

Many mobile browsers are using the word "AvantGo" or "UP.Browser" (this is Openwave's phone browser, 55% of the phone market), EVEN if they have nothing to do with these browsers, they simply enter these words in their user agent to force mobile sites to recognize them as mobile browsers. The Danger HipTop/Sidekick device does exactly that for example: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; AvantGo 3.2; ProxiNet; Danger hiptop 1.0)
I have talked to Doug about this many months ago but he hasn't decided adding it to Minimo.

The only sites that recognize Minimo today as a mobile browser are my sites I think, as I have a known... syndorme wanting to support all weird mobile browsers: ;)
www.OSNews.com
www.GnomeFiles.org
www.mobits.com
(and I think this one too) www.buyindie.net
These sites will serve their mobile versions for minimo, you can check it out.

Yup well said eugenia. I believe we are picking a solid one at this release or next one. Infact that may be the solid UA already. Maybe I can talk Doug into switching it. I had discussed it w/ him 2 months back.

for being in the early beta stage looks great so far.

i kinda invision something close to FTXbrowser when it's finished.
the tabbing and full screen options are a big help in the mobile format.

It doesn't really require full switch, it just requires to have the word "avantgo" in it, along with the rest of the regular minimo UA. :)
