WiFiTunes

All those on this site that speak fluent techy, raise your hands! Good thing this is the internet and no one can see! Gigi, pointed this utility/music streaming program out to me and I thought I would pass on the info. It sounds like it could be really interesting, but I am not knowledgable enough to say how well it might work. From the website:
"This application will discover via Rendezvous any iTunes running on Macs or PCs on your local network and allow you to browse the library or playlist and then stream MP3s directly to your PDA."
You can check out WiFiTunes here. Happy iTuning!

Yep, this version finally works, the previous one crashed half way through indexing my music library.
It keeps the entire play list in RAM and allocates approximately 1MB per day of music stored so beware if you have large playlists.

I think WiFitunes would serve well as a frontend for betaplayer, sort of addon to betaplayer's playlist browser. Betaplayer plays all the files that WiFitunes are tumbling accross plus has some nice features such as key shortcuts, etc. This is my personal opinion.

I've been streaming my MP3s from my home PC to my Axim using Orb software. It's free and it works pretty well. It allows allows me to view my photos and stream my videos.

I am not quite sure why using any of these programs is any better than just opening Resco explorer and browsing the hard drive of the computer that has the music on it. . a simple double click on the songs plays them. simple.

What am i missing here?

Hmm, good question. From the descriptions though, it sounds like your PDA has to be connected to your local network to use either WiFiTunes or Resco. With Orb, you access your home PC's media files from the Internet, i.e. from any public hotspot in the world. (And yes, it's secure -- uses both password verification and SSL security).

Streaming.

Of course - this version still supports MP3 only I assume. So a true streaming solution like SlimServer is a lot better.

buffering
Streaming

i don't get it.... are you guys having trouble with those things?

I play via resco and it is as smooth as silk... assuming i use betaplayer.. if i do a movie and i do it in WMV it always stops every 30 seconds and re buffers... never have that problem with movies in betaplayer

so aside from "streaming" and "buffering" which really tell me nothing, is there any valid reason?

First of all this looks like a great app. Previously I have just been streaming with Windows Media Encoder. I set up a play list with iTunes and play while I get the music on my Axim. Upgrading to this looks like a big improvment as I can change songs and what not from the client end.

This > Orb. (albeit via an intranet) Orb sends its info over the internet. So you have to use bandwith to stream. Therefore say you are downloading something big with Orb your DL is slowed. With WiFiTunes it isn't.

This > Resco. With WiFiTunes you can set up play lists and brows via Genre and Album and Artist making the task of finding your music easier and more convienent.

Edit:I just read on the web site that eventually it will support streaming over the internet. So there is another pluss!

I can't seem to get this program to work for me. I enabled file sharing in iTunes, yet it keeps says "its not accepting any more connections".

In my experience, Resco works great with WLan streaming, only problem is a lot of my videos are different formats, so I would have to change players accordingly. The nice thing about Orb (in addition to access from anywhere) is that it re-encodes your media on the fly so that all of it, despite codec, is playable through Media Player. Not to mention, Orb takes your bandwidth into account and adjusts the stream appropriately. I have yet to try the I-tunes thing, but I am pretty much against the iPod, I think it's crap. Let the flaming begin!

when you set up a share on your desktop did you turn off the password authentication? WiFi tunes doesnt support passwords, yet at least.

Also, the reason I use wifitunes over resco is the playlists, plus the possibility of tunes playing from one to the other. I havent been able to do this with any other player when streaming, unless I missed something
