Yep. 64-bit only and will require 3D accelerators. Supposedly there will be several levels of acceleration available depending on your video card. Most computers ship with Intel eXtreme graphics or some sort of integrated solution with very poor and basic acceleration, that will do for the low end version. The 64-bit will really hurt the people who have been buying P4's over the past couple years and will need basically a new system to upgrade. Those of us with AMD 64's or the newer Pentiums will be just fine though :)
And what is with the lame touchy-feely names? Where are the good ol' year names, like Windows 2006, or better yet, versions, like Windows 8.0
I'll probably get it right when it comes out, simply because I can get it from my university's library for $20:approve: Not likely I'll install it right away until there are enough drivers out for it and it works flawlessly with my plethora of games. (Only reason I'm not using Win XP x64-no darn drivers).
It comes in 32 bit and 64 bit. And for those of you who don't know who Jim Allchin is, he is in VP of platforms at Microsoft. I.e. He is in charge of Windows.

As for timing, Allchin said development is basically on track for the schedule outlined by the company last fall. An updated developer preview version will be given out at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference, or WinHEC, set to take place at month's end in Seattle. The company is still shooting for an initial beta around midyear, though it could be July, as the new official schedule is "early summer." A second beta is planned, though no final date has been given, with the goal of having the OS broadly available on PCs by next year's holiday season. Longhorn will come in 32-bit and 64-bit versions, Allchin said.
While many details about Longhorn have been nailed down, others, including its name, are still up in the air. The company is close to deciding which different versions will be available, but it's not ready to announce that yet. It is too soon to say, for example, whether there will be separate Media Center or Tablet PC editions, Allchin said.
"We are moving features around," he said.
Microsoft talked fairly early about Longhorn, with company Chairman Bill Gates first demonstrating it at a developer conference
I like longhorn better VISTA sounds gay besides there is a company called VISTA PRINTS... I hope there are better things in it than just a makeover.
I think it's happy sounding too!

I'm also disappointed with the name- it sounds like pseudo-trendy advertising. Longhorn had much more of the Geeky computer-nerd sound. We waited a long time and still have to see what it offers.
Ultimately, it is Windows -- and we'll all be along that path soon enough.
Wish they spent some of the testing and improvements on the PPC. I'm so curious about Mobile 5, and I'm hanging in with my Axim, but the Palm allure has yet to wear off after more than 6 months.
Keep us advised Chris- tell it like it really is!
Msliberty
here we go again. the jump on the bash Windows bandwagon clan are ready to go. how boring. The name is cool. get used to it or continue to use Apple. ooops?? you don't use Apple?? Why?? Why would you blindly bash something and then continue to support it? me thinks possibly you thinks it's "cool" to follow the others.
as I said, how typically boring.
sheesh, you're starting already by trashing the freakin' NAME??!! lol!
zzzz....
wow you get to beta test it :)
Keep us updated :approve:
Some MSDN subscriptions allow it. If you're a software developer, you HAVE to have it wayyy ahead of time.
How else will you be able to recode your software in time for the release? Gotta have your customers happy, they want to install the "latest & greatest" and still expect your software flawlessly.
First release of the "Vista" is likely to have some issues. But it will be a giant leap for the operating system. :approve:
I think early adopters and people who dare to venture into a new world will/should jump on it. The chicken heart should follow.
The name "Vista" although sounds kinda boring now. But it has a deep underlying meaning :approve: but it requires imagination and well, only if you can...........
(Vista = An awareness of a range of time, events, or subjects; a broad mental view)

Microsoft has a history of ruining names. The codename for Windows XP was Whistler, thanks, I'll take Whistler over XP, and now Vista instead of Longhorn. A shame really. At any rate, Vista stands for:
Viruses
Infections
Spyware
Trojans
Adware
I'll be on XP until I get new hardware... Don't know what the minimum specs will be but I think vista will be strugling
