Picking the Right Email Strategy for Your Windows Mobile Device
Picking the Right Email Strategy for Your Windows Mobile Device
Jason Dunn posted this very informative piece over on Pocket PC Thoughts today and I thought y'all would find it helpful.
Windows Mobile-based devices, both Pocket PCs and Smartphones, can be powerful tools for working with e-mail. If you're anything like me, you get a lot of e-mail every day, and managing the flow of e-mail when you're away from your desk is a critical task best accomplished with a Windows Mobile-based device. There are several options for working with your e-mail, including POP, IMAP, and Exchange ActiveSync. Each has specific advantages and disadvantages.
Curious, based on the above story, who actually uses their PPC for email? I started trying but with running a business 4-locations we get 100's of emails a day and a Laptop is the only choice. However calendar, contacts, eWallet items etc.. is primary for PPC.
So who uses email on the PPC.. not who has it installed and uses it once in a while, but who uses email on a daily basis on PPC.

Not many people I guess. In my case my work is far from cities, so I use it paired with my phone, but when I´m back at office I sync it and I´m back with my Desktop mail.
i would use it if gmail was stupid with it...since gmail now works in PIE, if I have internet so i can GET the email, I can just go to the site...no offline reading which sucks but its a sacrafice i suppose

I do... but it's personal email only, mainly gmail through pop3. All my work stuff goes to my desktop.

Sort of what I was thinking, it seems the most popular software is desktop, modification, schedules, finance, calendar and entertainment. Considering all, and the screen on the PPC I can't imagine trying to use a mobile phone to read mail, and one of my phones the Nokia 3650 has an extra large screen, but still out of the question for email.

i use my PPC to get email when i am not at my PC or not got laptop in tow.
I have the charger next to my bed, so when i am playing consoles i leave it on mail and it gets emails when they come in. I keep a copy of the emails on the server when using PPC or PC and only delete them from the server once they are downloaded to my Laptop.
I use the PPC to review email... for messages that I may need to reference for details.
I seldom respond or create on the PPC... I have occasionally go to webmail, but that is only when really bored

I use Inbox to check my POP and Gmail accounts when I'm out and about; not daily, but fairly regularly. What surprises me is that no developer has come up with a really killer e-mail app. Inbox, like PIE, is embarrassingly weak.
I use WebIS Mail 2.0 to keep in contact with my office, and have them forward me urgent documents, when necessary. I'm fortunate in that client emails are generally checked and replied to by the secretary or paralegal. So, yes, I do use my PPC email for work, but only for internal communication and document retrieval, etc.

I use Microsoft Web Access for my (exchange server-based) email. It requires being online, which is a big disadvantage. I haven't implemented exchange active sync yet because we don't have Exchange 2003. When I have the courage I'll try it with WM5 (when released!) & Exchange 2003... hopefully getting Blackberry-style email at last!!
I use mine several times a day to check for email. My work is spread out among different buildings and I usually check my email all the time. I use mNotes to sync to my Lotus Notes account at work and I also sync to my hotmail account. I primarily use it to read. I have responded on occasion but for whatever reason, sometimes the font size in my sent mail is a eye test for those people reciving. I use my X30 for IM all the time.
I own a WebIS license, had it installed and working for a while, just felt that email on the PPC is just too cumbersome. However as an application goes, the WebIS Mail 2.0 is nicer then most.

I actually use my pocket pc for email on a regular basis. 50% is personal and 50% is work related. I'm also a full-time student and work full time as well; therefore time around my regular computer is limited.
After reading thru this thread, I wanted to pose a question. The email client built into Windows Mobile 2003 is very very poor. I would love the ability of storing emails on my CF or SD card instead of internal memory.
Does anyone know of a setting (or registry hack) or possibly another cheap or freeware program altogether that would allow this? Also, the ability to download and view simple attachments (word, excel, graphic, and .pdf files) would be a major improvement as this apparently is not done automatically either.
I opened a trial account with 4Smartphone to check out synching my Outlook 2003 with Microsoft Exhange Server, I downloaded a profile from their site, and BOOM my entire contacts, calendar, tasks in outlook are GONE!!!
Where could they have gone?
