Tip of the Day! by DellTech
ActiveSync uses TCP/IP to communicate with your host computer, so for those of you out there who have Norton or Mcafee or ZoneAlarm personal firewall software out there you may have problems syncronizing your Axim to you host computer. The firewall software may think that your Axim is trying to "hack" into your computer. To combat this problem, you have to configure your firewall to allow WCESCOMM.exe unrestricted access. WCESCOMM.exe is the app that ActiveSync uses to communicate Pocket PC devices with your PC. The WCESCOMM.exe file is located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync if you installed ActiveSync using the default directory during installation.
I hope this is of some help. Have a great day and enjoy your Axim!

Syncronizing with Outlook.
In case you didn't noticed, the Dell Axim ships MS Outlook 2000 on the Pocket PC Companion CD instead of MS Outlook 2002. The reason behind this is that while Dell tested both in our labs, Outlook 2000 has been more consistently stable to use. Outlook 2002 as well as Outlook Express supports webmail which ActiveSync has problems with. (Although I have seen certain customers able to get 2002 to work just fine.)
ActiveSync also does not syncronize subfolders in Outlook as well.
I hope this is of some help. Have a great day and enjoy your Axim!

Synchronizing Wirelessly
For those of you having problems with synchronizing wirelessly, this may or may not be of some help to you.
Now, I haven't tested adhoc mode yet but will post results as soon as I validate my methods before posting it here. Here's how I setup my Axim to sync wirelessly at work, this should give those of you who synchronizing at work an idea on how. Though sync'ng at home should be too terribly different. Ok, lets start.
I use the Dell TrueMobile 1180 CF card. Install the Dell Client Software; then go into the Client SW and associate it by plugging in the Network Name (SSID) and the rest to get it associated. Once I get a good signal that's not all, I have to plug in VPN settings as well and proxy server (Its needed for me if I want PIE or Pocket Internet Explorer to work at work.).
This next step is assuming that you already have a partnership created and have synchronized via cable/cradle before.
Go into ActiveSync on your Axim. (Start=>ActiveSync) Tap on Tools=>Options. Under the PC tab I want to make sure there's a check box on "Include PC when synchronizing remotely and connect to:"; then you want to add your full computer name into the drop-down/text box. To find your full computer name, on your host computer hold down the windows key (its the flying windows logo key, should be located between ctrl and alt) then press on the pause or pause/break key. System Properties should come up, then click on "Computer Name" if you have Win2K/WinXP. (On Win9x, right click on Network Neighborhood then click on the "Indentification" tab.)
Next I got to the "Schedule" tab, here you want to make sure you uncheck "When synchroning remotely with my PC, disconnect when complete". If you don't uncheck this, after ActiveSync detects changes and syncs, immediately after it will show "Disconnected" which to some people; they believed that it never synchronized or didn't sync correctly. Hit "OK" and now I am ready to sync wireless, just have to tap on "Sync" in ActiveSync on the Axim.
Good luck!
I hope this is of some help. Have a great day and enjoy your Axim!

Problems synchronizing Calender or Contacts...
If you have a problem synchronizing Calender or Contacts or both and you know that its definitely the problem because you have already tried synchronizing without them and it works fine. (FYI, you can change what you want ASync to synchronizing. Open ASync on your host computer, then click Tools => Options. Uncheck Calender or Contacts that seems to be causing ASync to hang.) Now at certain times, ASync can have problems sync'ng corrupted data in your Calender or Contacts. Here's something to try. Lets say you have a data field in your Outlook Contacts for one of your contacts. The data corruption if you could see them probably looks strange like this: $&**^[]`. If you export your Contacts from Outlook into a text file using Comma Separated Values, the corrupted data would go into the text file as strange text.
You can do this in Outlook by going to: File => Import and Export => Export to a file => Comma Separated Values (Windows).
Now if you import it back into Outlook the corrupted data is not considered corrupted data anymore but just a text characters. So one or more of your contacts may end up looking like: Instead of Name: John, it may be like Name: %^@^#. Try synchronizing again, if still no go. I would suggesting backing up your Outlook stuff into a .pst file and try other extreme methods.
I hope this is of some help. Have a great day and enjoy your Axim!

TCP/IP ports
For those with a firewall that uses port numbers rather than allowing individual programs access ...
You need to allow your handheld device to access ports 5678 and 5679 on your PC. The PC will need to access port 990 on your handheld device.

Just FYI, I am using Active Sync 3.7 with Outlook 2003 Beta 2 and it works fine. No problems whatsoever, sync daily with it.
Never had any problems with Outlook 2002 either, for that matter.

"What happens when two item like calendar/contacts/inbox that are the same has a conflict, which one will ActiveSync replace?"
Lets say you just synchronized your Axim and got an appointment with John Doe that day for 2PM, while you were out for lunch you got word that its been moved to 4PM. Then you changed the appointment in your Axim for 4PM now. You get back to your computer at 1PM and synchronized again. Now your calendar on your host computer is 2PM while your Axim shows 4PM, which one does ActiveSync replace?
This is an option that you decide and here's where you go to set that. Open up ActiveSync on your Axim, then tap on Tools=>Options, then tap on the Server tab, then tap Advance, then Rules. Here you have two choice.
Advanced Server Options
------------------------------------------------------------
If there is a conflict (an item has changed on the device and server):
1. Always replace the item on my device
2. Always replace the item on the server
Hope this was helpful and enjoy your Axim!

I ended up deleting Outlook 2000 today because it keep looking for a file which it said was on the CD. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Outlook 2000 several times without any change. Is it in fact possible to sync with Outlook Express in regard to contacts and email? If so, how?

I've never got wireless sync to work. I tried to follow your instructions here but I am unable to enter any text in the drop-down box ... it appears to be a selection only and not a text box. What am I doing wrong?

This is what you wrote, but I don't have this option when I open activesync on my dell axim. I have two options "sync" or "menu" and I can't find the Rules options to change it, I want to be able to upload my contacts from outlook 2007 to my axim x51v

Congratulations on Finding this gem, myckro! I don't have a WM5 device, otherwise I'd be all over this.
Here's the official ActiveSync tutorial, but I think it's a bit dated for your needs.
