Smartphones... hmmmmm

A friend of mine just got a Moto Q from Verizon and had me take a look at it.

For as long as I have played with PPCs, I've not used a smartphone OS.

Some of it is very similar, some of it isn't, and many things that I've taken for granted in PPC are not present or I haven't found them yet.

So, I'm helping him get it setup in MDC and how to use outlook to build his contacts and appointments and such. Showing him how to add MP3s as music and custom ringtones and then I realized that I don't know of any software that is for SmartPhones...

So I guess now I am a beginner in this area and would like some suggestions... If I'm the beginner here, then my friend shouldn't even touch it yet.

Well, to start with you can go to this Handango page and look at all of the programs available. I use many of the same on my Q as I do on my Ipaq. SK Tools, Repligo, Resco Explorer, PhatNotes, List Pro, Sprite, Opera, SOTI Pocket Controller, etc. All of these offer a smartphone non-touch screen upgrade if you already own the PPC version. I also use Papyrus (calendar), Facade (like Pocket Breeze) for the today screen. Resco also makes a System Toys which allows you to close programs completely.

Personally I still have some difficulty getting used to the non-touch screen but I actually don't mind the screen size, after all you can only read so much at one time even if you have a full size PC. Overall the Q is a great product and I've never had any trouble with the phone part of it.

Radimus, my biggest complaint witht he Cingular Blackjack was the lack of Resco File Explorer with all the goodies, well it is released now for smartphone! That is a must have in my opinion!

I'll second the recommendations of both Papyrus and Facade. Both softwares add flexibility to the native calendar & more useful homescreen respectively. I would also throw out the recommendations for:

PhoneAlarmSP - Profile manager on steroids (LEGAL). pocketMax Software - Pocket PC Software & development

John Cody's Alerts - Multiple Alarms & timed events. OMNISOFT: Smartphone Software, Pocket PC Software, Windows Mobile Software

And probably the MOST important addition : SPRITE BACKUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Guys

I have just recently bought a Motorola Q9h here in New Zealand, great device, I decided that I wanted to try a non-touch screen device and so far just love the design, feel and overall use of the Q9.

Some of the apps that I have currently installed and recommend are:

* SBSH Facade
* SBSH Papyrus
* SBSH PocketWeather
* SPB Wallet
* SPB Back-Up
* SPB Insight
* PhoneAlarm
* Resco Explorer

I am still looking for a Billing & Time Tracking software, I used to use BillRate but this is only for PPC so I could use it on my Axim, but would like it on my phone, I have seen TimeTTracker not as easy to use as BillRate, anyone have any other ideas?

Here is a pic of my Q9, with PhoneAlarm, Facade & Pocketweather icons, using Juni's Organizer theme.

Cheers

Jace
