Cool Oh-Oh ... I think I'm getting HOOKED!

As everybody knows - I've been using one PPC or another for a long time. Loved my E-100, h1910, Axim and hx2495b.

No way was I going to get a "converged" device. Just give me my PPC and my RAZR.

(One of my colleagues saw my RAZR and said "How 2002!").

Last week I decided I wanted a new gadget. Verizon was offering an upgrade to a Moto-Q9c for about $60. Yeah ... I thought, I'd like to try text-messaging with a QWERTY keyboard for a change but that's about all this upgrade will get me.

Er ... well, no ... now I can do my personal e-mail from this thing and since that's on the device why not put my contacts, calendar and task list there? SBSH Facade cleans up the Today section and PI-8 makes the calendar stuff workable. This is better than I thought it would be.

The "Q" won't replace the hx2495 for some of the stuff I really need a touch screen for, but as a primary productivity device this guy is looking pretty good! Nice & small ... screen pretty awfully clear and readable (though small). Text input VERY easy with the thumboard. Device built pretty sturdy. Hmm... these little boxes have gone a long way.

I think I'm a convert.

Still ... like I said, it won't replace the PPC, but if I have to have just one device with me this "Q" is definitely adequate. Too bad Pilot MyCast doesn't support it yet...

For $60 how could you resist? If you are going to replace a cellphone any way, why wouldn't you replace it with a windows mobile device? The additional functionality is great and you've always got your work horse, pocket pc handy too. That's how I wound up with my converged device, and I still carry my pocket pc with me too.

My husband says I'm like a gunslinger with a pocket pc on either hip...well I don't exactly wear them on my hip and you probably don't either, but welcome to the gunslingers club.

The thing that I find funny is that I almost felt "guilty" getting another Windows Mobile device as if my original unit even cares!

For the first few days with it I tried to evaluate whether or not the "Q" could be a replacement for the HP. After tinkering around for a few days I finally came to the conclusion that the "Q" is now my "communicator" which includes the phone, text-messaging, e-mail and the other Outlook functions like Calendar & Task List. None of that stuff requires a heavy-duty box - but at the same time they all go together logically.

So ... now the "Q" will be the communicator and the HP will be for everything else. I guess I was trying to divide the functionality in such a way that the stuff could be grouped where I wouldn't have to grab both devices if I need to go to a meeting or something. I'd rather not have them both on my hip (gunslinger style) really unless I have to. I'm trying to SIMPLIFY things.

I imagine after a month or two I'll have settled the machines down to the point where they don't get in each other's way. At first it was one of those "which do I grab?" situations. I also didn't want to keep the same KIND of data on the two of them (even though synchronization keeps that cleaned up) - might forget to update something then it would be one of those "where did I put that?" deals.

Am I the only one around here that wastes too much time micromanaging these gadgets?

One thing's for sure ... I'd never go back to a paper scheduler/calendar. These little boxes have gotten to be very slick. This "Q" seems to get good reception, too. Not a bad upgrade.
