i'm confused...wasn't it always like this? when i downloaded the plugin a few months ago, i saw the same information. as far as i knew, the standalone player was never free. that's why i downloaded ant flashassist: http://www.antmobile.com/
i'm using the free eval until it expires, then i might buy it (however, i've had it for months and it hasn't expired yet...)

Antmobile's flashAssist requires macromedia flash player 6 plugin.. which is not free anymore.

The end user should not notice anything - companies are licensing the player and will include it in their products that need it.
New Pocket PC buyers will notice. PocketIE uses the Flash Player Plugin (not the stand-alone Flash Player which has always been a separate product) to display embedded content, it is now up to each hardware manufacturer to license Flash separately and so far only HP and Toshiba have signed up.

So I checked out several sites trying to find out if there were any free DL's anywhere...as of yesterday, I can't find one that hasn't been removed. But I did find a link to complain on Antmobile's site. Here's the reply I received...
My intention is to provide an open dialog with you and other developers about the FP6 for PPC and to answer your questions - I want to provide you with as much information as I can.
The free download allowed anyone (developers, consumers) to view Flash content in PIE or outside of PIE using a 3rd party solution which required the ActiveX control to be installed on the end-users PPC. The free FP6 for PPC download was developed 2 years ago and tested and certified on Pocket PC 2003 OS devices - it's as is. We don't offer any support for other PPC OS devices (Windows Mobile 5.0 for example).
The Flash Player 6 for Pocket PC Distribution Kit (previously known as the Standalone Player for PPC) ($500) is meant for developers who want to create Flash content and to sell it with the FP6 packaged with it - as one file. It’s not meant to be used by consumers or developers interested in just viewing SWF files on their Pocket PC, either in PIE or via a 3rd party solution.
Other developers have mentioned that if they're not interested in creating Flash content to sell then the distribution kit is of no interest to them. If all you want to do is to view web sites in PIE that have Flash content or to view SWF files on your PPC that use a 3rd party solution then all you want is the free download. We’re actively looking at a solution that will satisfy both consumers and developers.
So regardless with what's happened in the past week regarding the removal of the free download, what would you like to see from us?
I'm looking for suggestions/ideas of what would be the best solution for both types of developers - ones that are interested in just viewing Flash content in PIE and others who want to sell their content with the player packaged. By sharing your ideas I can then communicate your requests internally for discussions. Also any suggestions that would assist you when discussing Flash content on PPCs to your customers. Again, we value your feedback both positive and negative as it's important for us to understand your needs and pain points so we can figure out solutions to keep you and the rest of the PPC developer community happy.
i have the older flash player if anyone wants it. PM me unless youre'a developer. That way, everyone is happy. consumers get their falsh, developers get to buy, and MM gets their money. Or use the link above. i'll only do this for a week.
