DVD Catalyst/PocketDVD3

For Windows users I would like to suggest DVD Catalyst/PocketDVD3 formally PocketDVD found here http://tinyurl.com/7d489 This is by far the best method I have found to rip DVDs and re-encode my videos for my Dell Axim. Allot of you may have not known this but for you folks out there that has just gotten the new video iPod, well this is the software you need because it now supports h264 output for the ipod. It only cost $ 17.95 U.S. and will do all the video encoding and DVD ripping you will ever want to do. Outputs in various formats to be played back on PocketPC, SmartPhone, iPod, PSP, and others Plus it will also do a High Quality divx output. Output formats include WMV 7,8,9, DIVX. XVID, H264, MP4, and VOB copy. Not only is it a DVD ripper it also comes with a built in Video converter program to take all your videos in various formats that you may have and encode them say to a h264 or mp4 for your new video iPod. Don't take my word for it though. This software is also the winner of the 2005 PocketPc magazine award for DVD Copiers. Plus it comes with a full 5 day trial. It is not limited in any way, and allows you to convert as many DVD's and movie files as you can possibly fit within its trial period.

I'm late. I just went to their website http://www.pocketdvd.ca/ and noticed the upgrade. I almost started a new thread but then thought to see if someone else had. Glad I did. I haven't yet downloaded the upgrade. Have either of you tried the start-end time editor. How accurate is it? I sure miss the chapter selector in ver 1. that was taken out in ver 2.

I downloaded the program today and it seemed to work OK -- went through a quick conversion and WinMedia player played the converted copy OK on my PC -- but on the PPC, Media player moblie will not recognize the file. Any ideas?

It could be that the quick conversion you had set was set to encode to a divx file and WMP for PPC can't play divx. In this case You need to install the Windows Mobile version of TCPMP found here http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/download

bigds63's post is right on if you want to encode and play your movies using the Divx codec. Most of us go that route for a bit higher quality. But it does mean installing a second Media Player. However, if you still prefer to use Windows Media player mobile you can. Just go to the following link and download the codec file that enables the WMV format encoding for DVD Catalyst. http://www.pocketdvd.ca/support/

what settings are you all using with this program??? i head it was quick, but here i am ripping caddyshack (1 h 57m) and it has taken 98 minutes to do. i used single pass, 400kbps and 64 audio quality.

also, when playing the files on my ax 51v, there is a noticeable audio to video lag. any ideas???

"Quick" is a relative concept. The actual play time of the original movie is your baseline measurement. Some programs take longer than that to encode some less. With that in mind your 1h 38m is considerably faster than the movie's 1:57. I like smaller file sizes so I encode at 220 for Video and 80 audio and I use 2 pass to improve the action scenes. 2 pass of course doubles encoding time. Secondly your audio lag comment reminded me of the other reason for encoding in Divx and using TCPMP. Going that route cleared up my audio probs.

thanks for the reply akretsch. so it sounds like the time is about right for this application. i'll have to try 220 and test the quality against my 400kbps.

lastly, i wanted to point out that my audio issues were in fact divx and using tcpmp. there is a noticeable lag on these .avi files i made using the divx method and dvd catylst.

any other comments?
